Fact of the Day: Did you know The Scream was painted five times?

Between 1893 and 1910, Edvard Munch created four painted versions and several prints of The Scream. The first two, made in 1893, are now housed in Oslo’s National Gallery and the Munch Museum. In 1895, he completed a pastel version—now privately owned—and also produced a black-and-white lithograph that year.

His final painted version, from around 1910, came after The Scream had already gained fame as a haunting emblem of modern anxiety. Each version reflects Munch’s evolving style and emotion, from soft pastels to stark contrasts—reminding us how deeply one image can echo across generations.

But why is the figure in the painting screaming? Here's the explanation.
