Experts issue urgent warning about popular medication linked to serious mental health risks – should you be worried?

Content Warning: This article mentions suicide and sexual assault, which may be distressing for some readers. Discretion is advised.

Recent warnings have raised serious concerns about the safety of a commonly prescribed medication used by many Australians.

What was once considered a reliable treatment option has now become the focus of alarming reports about its potential side effects.

As investigations unfold, the implications for patients and healthcare providers are becoming clearer, with experts urging caution.

Montelukast, sold under the brand name Singulair, is a medication used to treat and prevent chronic asthma in adults and children.

Unfortunately, it has been linked to serious psychiatric side effects. According to a recent research in the US, montelukast attaches to brain cells that control mood, attention, decision-making, and impulse control, which may explain its link to mental health issues.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia received roughly 200 reports of behavioural side effects associated with the drug over the last decade.

These reports included 57 cases of depression, 60 cases of suicidal thoughts, and 17 suicide attempts or incidents of intentional self-harm.

Seven cases involved patients taking montelukast who went on to commit suicide.

Melbourne boy Harrison Sellick was one of those affected.

He was prescribed montelukast when he was just two years old and began experiencing severe behavioural issues, including suicidal thoughts, by age five.

His mother, Vanessa, recalled that Harrison had long meltdowns lasting up to an hour and a half, and would make general comments about death and self-loathing.

Harrison, now 17 and off the medication, attempted suicide at the age of five.

The use of montelukast, typically prescribed for asthma, is widespread in Australia.

However, experts have urged caution, as studies show the drug may increase the risk of mental health issues for some users.

Dr Nial Wheate, Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at Macquarie University, pointed out that, over the same period the TGA received reports, more than 200,000 montelukast prescriptions were filled in Australia.

This highlights the widespread use of the medication despite the growing concerns.

Despite the concerning figures, Dr Wheate stressed that there is no conclusive evidence that montelukast directly causes depression and suicide.

However, he noted that it seems to heighten the risk for certain individuals.

Anyone concerned about montelukast's potential effects was advised to consult with their doctor before making any changes to their treatment.

Discontinuing the drug abruptly could put asthma patients at risk of serious health consequences, including life-threatening attacks.

Montelukast works by blocking chemicals that cause airways to swell and constrict during an asthma attack.

For patients whose asthma is difficult to manage with other treatments, montelukast has been a vital alternative since it was first prescribed in the 1990s.

However, the controversy surrounding the medication has persisted.

This is particularly true after a US investigation confirmed a link between montelukast and psychiatric conditions, including suicidal thoughts and hallucinations.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revealed that lab tests had shown montelukast binds significantly to receptor cells in the brain that are associated with psychiatric effects.

Despite these findings, the FDA has not pulled the drug from the market, noting that studies are still ongoing.

Singulair became a lucrative product for Merck after its release in 1998, generating billions in sales.

Early advertising touted the drug as safe, with side effects considered minimal, even claiming the medication’s effect on the brain was negligible.

However, by 2019, health authorities had documented thousands of psychiatric incidents linked to montelukast, including dozens of suicides.

One such case was that of Nicholas England, whose 22-year-old son, Nick, fatally shot himself less than two weeks after beginning the drug.

Nick England, otherwise healthy with no prior mental health issues, had trouble sleeping after taking montelukast and tragically ended his life.

Merck's spinoff company, Organon, which now markets Singulair, maintained that the drug’s safety profile remained solid.

They also stated that the product label contained sufficient information about its benefits, risks, and potential side effects.

Despite these claims, health authorities and campaigners continue to call for more to be done to raise awareness about the risks of montelukast.

For now, both doctors and parents must weigh the potential benefits of the medication against the risks, especially when it comes to children.

If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available through mental health helplines that can provide guidance and assistance.

Key Takeaways

  • Montelukast, sold as Singulair, has been linked to serious psychiatric side effects, including depression, suicidal thoughts, and self-harm, leading to warnings, particularly for children.
  • The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia received around 200 reports of behavioural side effects, including suicide attempts, over the past decade, despite widespread use of the medication.
  • Experts, including Dr Nial Wheate, highlight that while there is no conclusive evidence montelukast directly causes these mental health issues, it may heighten the risk for certain individuals, especially in children.
  • Despite the controversy and concerns raised, the medication remains on the market, with ongoing investigations into its effects, and health authorities continue to call for greater awareness of the risks.

As the debate around the safety of montelukast continues, many are left wondering whether the potential risks outweigh the benefits for certain individuals.

What are your thoughts on the use of montelukast for children? Have you or someone you know experienced any side effects?

My daughter is on montelukast which is a tablet, she has been on it now for a few years with no side affects.
When she was younger she was on singular which is similar but I think it's the childrens strength .

We knew of these side affects more than 10 years ago, when she started it. And we have kept a close eye on her.

She is now 20 and used montelukast plus three other medications for asthma including a once amonth injection which cost $3200.

She just tested positive to covid as I'm writing this 😔

Has no one understood yet that when a new supposedly great working new drug comes along it’s pushed through and when it’s made billions to the dealer then we are all told not to take the asthma meds you are currently taking cos they are not good for you serious side effects blah blah..so you can take this great new safe one. I have survived (chronic asthma) very well thank you taking the drugs I started off with and refused to change as all docs told me new ones better yours not good etcetc. I always said if it works for me I will not change . So now 70+ and still taking ventolin and theophylline with no mental issues. All the drugs they want us to stop are all replaced by drugs for the seriously mental problems of people. Same goes for what the world is doing with opioids and things like Valium . They are perfect for what they. We’re intended for - panadeine for serious bad pain- worked immediately to alleviate the patient of pain only and then stop taking with NO OTHER PROBLEMS . Pain fixed . And same goes with Valium , serious panic attacks that makes you literally insane and anxiety where your brain is driving to hell. Take the drug when this occurs and within half hour , life has calmed down a little , maybe can crawl into bed and rest peacefully. Again this meant for these type of problems and no other side effects. If you want to kill yourself sone other time it’s not because of these drugs. They are made exclusively for these sort of problems and work for these problems only. Now they try to get rid of all these pure effective drugs and want to give you drugs that are all mind altering mental health drugs that don’t even have any effect unless you been taking for a month or so. Now how the heck is that going to help if you have had 3 teeth extracted and need it NOW. Or your anxiety level has reached a level so high that you are now in a bathtub trying to do away with yourself as the doc says you can’t have Valium but can take this new one combined with these other 2 drugs and in about 2 wks they will help. This is what is happening now some one making fortune on these other drugs plus governments and medical people. And these older drugs are under such high control , people are NOT Dying from overdose. They take other things where this may occur but it’s always these drugs that get blame as they happen to be using . Gov has full control of these drugs and know exactly who Takes them and how many they take and if they think poor doc giving too much , he is investigated like a drug dealer and all newer docs can’t even prescribe them as they need special authority to prescribe. And all to scared to do it. So very hard to get as the older docs leave and rest fed up with so many mindless regulations they choose some other profession. The gov is at fault for all of This. They want you to develop bad mental issues and the blame the old drugs or they just want to control you ALL!

My son who is 40 yrs old was diagnosed with Asthma when he was 2 yrs old. He was under the supervision of a Paediatrician, so thought I could trust the treatment plan. Anyway he was prescribed Asthma medication which I carefully followed, but I noticed that he was developing some very erratic behaviours i.e head banging, hyperactivity and tantrums, he also developed bright rosy cheeks, not my little son at all! By the way the ASTHMA DID NOT IMPROVE EITHER. So I decided to try an old fashioned remedy i.e COD LIVER OIL it was available in little capsules and he took them. I didn`t think they would harm him as when we children given a dose every week or so. The outcome was that within 2 weeks his asthma had dramatically improved, not the behaviours, so I took him of the prescribed medication and within another 2 weeks I had my son back minus all the concerning behaviours. And his ASTHMA WAS ALSO GONE.
I took him back to the Paediatrician who told me that this must be a "SPONTAINIOUS RECOVERY" completely dismissing the possibility that COD LIVER OIL Vitamin A may have helped. I did not keep him on the CLO, but every now and then if the Asthma seemed to be developing again would use the CLO routine, To-day he does not have ASTHMA AND HAS DEVELOPED INTO A VERY HEALTHY adult no Psychiatric issues. This is just my experience but worth considering.

So only 200 out of about 200,000 users in Australia.
That fits in to safe standards with Heath Authorities concern if the drug was not taken then more would die. A nice thing for them.
That is NOT my opinion. that is Heath risk management balancing taking it or not taking it. ALL Medications have side effects and withdrawal effects.
I got lucky with My GP who tells me the side effects and withdrawal effects before I choose to have them or refuse her recommendations based on side effects and withdrawal effects that are worse then the condition itself.

And that figure is over a 10 year period.
If you look at other medications and rheir side affects the numbers are higher

My doctor is closed today and called a medical centre close by to see if my daughter could get a telephone appointment for antivirals which she had last time she had covid.
They told us she needed to go in . My daughter is a nurse and has seen first hand what Covid can do to vulnerable people and decided to decline the appointment
She wasn't willing to go a sit in a waiting room where there maybe elderly or young patients.

I've been asleep for 3 hours and just woke with a sore throat and headache 😫
Maybe if other people thought like my daughter these flu's wouldn't be spreading like they are

At the practice l go to, people with COVID last year made an appointment & were required to remain in their car on arrival & phone Reception. Their G.P. would be notified & a consult would be done at the car thus avoiding contact with other people. Each patient was still required to wear a mask.

This year they have a fenced off area in the Waiting Room which is less frequented but the same rules apply. A mask if you have a cough, cold, runny nose etc. As each patient checks in they are asked if they have those symptoms & any person who does & does not have a mask will be given one to wear while in the Surgery confines.

Your daughter is very thoughtful but perhaps the Practice should consider an arrangement where they visit a patient in their car. Due to her selfless attitude your daughter will suffer until she can get treatment.

I wished NSW would do the same.
We ended up needing to take her to hospital at 10pm and it is now 2 30 am.
They just did an exray and blood test, and we are waiting on the results. They did put us in a seperate room but they are not really worried.
I told them I may have covid, and all they said was, " it's going around again." They asked if we were vaccinated

They should be more careful with covid and all flu's just to stop the spread.20250126_023444.jpg

Not a great attitude from a hospital.

I agree with you, I have found the older medications work well, i.e valium, when you ask a doctor for a script you are treated like the local drug runner. About 10 yrs ago, after an extremely stressfull life event, I developed serious anxiety i.e panick attacks, this stopped my life in it`s tracks. I was prescribed Seraquel (QUETIAPINE) and I slept for 4 years, could hardly function at all, put on heaps of weight, my memory has never been the same and developed a fatty pancreas. It helped with the panick attacks, but the rest of my life more or less stopped. Anyway, I decided to take myself of the drug and (that was a nightmare) I still have the occassional panick attack, but my friend suggested that I try valium and it does work and it works quickly. Still no script, I occassionally manage to get a couple of valium from an elderly relative who has had no problem getting them from her doctor.???

Unless there is an update vaccination will not prevent covid, it reduces the side effects

Maybe you should change doctors for a starter....and get your own scripts for the medications that you are needing.

I have done this and had the same response, no valium!!! You completely missed the point my relative is 88 yrs old and for some reason this medication is O.K probably won`t kill her. I`m still young enough to be used as a lab rat??

So if you have stopped taking Seraquel and the doctor will not give you Valium...then what has he prescribed for you to take?
