Expert issues warning on popular shopping app over data fears: ‘There is a risk’

In the digital age, the convenience of online shopping has become a staple in our daily lives, particularly for those who appreciate the ease of having goods delivered straight to our doorsteps.

However, with this convenience comes a responsibility to be vigilant about our online safety, especially when engaging with newer e-commerce platforms.

One platform that has caught the attention of cybersecurity experts is a budget online retailer, popular for its ultra-cheap household products.

Since its launch a year ago, PDD Holdings-owned Temu has seen millions of downloads and monthly users.

In Australia, 1.2 million people shop with the Temu app every month.

However, beneath the surface of bargain deals, a potential threat to customer's data privacy lurks.

Cybersecurity expert Susan McLean recently voiced her concerns on Sunrise, highlighting the inherent risks associated with online shopping.

'We know that Temu is collecting a lot of data,' McLean stated.

'But the problem is people simply download the app and click “I accept” without understanding what they're actually accepting.'

With the excitement of a new shopping avenue overshadowing the need to read the fine print, this is a common pitfall.

The issue, however, is not just about data collection.

McLean also pointed out the annoyance of being inundated with follow-up emails after making a purchase, a tactic used to keep customers engaged and potentially lead to further spending.

Graham Cooke, Head of Consumer Research at Finder, added another layer of caution, advising shoppers to be wary of the quality of off-brand merchandise sold on Temu.

Products may look similar to leading brands but often fall short in performance.

He used headphones and smartwatches as examples, where the items may appear identical to established brands but may lack sound quality, battery life, or compatibility with common operating systems.

Cooke also warned against the 'urgency' trap, where platforms create a false sense of scarcity and time pressure to encourage impulsive purchases.

This ‘gamification’ of shopping, he said, can be persuasive and could lead to regrettable decisions.

In response to these concerns, a Temu spokesperson has stated that it does not sell customer data and that its data practices are ‘in line with industry standards’.

‘At Temu, we prioritise the protection of privacy and are transparent about our data practices,’ they said.

‘Temu collects information for the sole purpose of providing and enhancing its e-commerce service to users. Temu does not ask for system permissions to access things like your photos, contacts, or location. Temu does not share financial data with vendors.’

Temu also maintains that it works with its online marketplace vendors to ensure accurate product descriptions.

They also implement a comprehensive system to identify and remove non-compliant products.

Despite these assurances, consumers must stay informed and cautious.

Here are some tips to help you stay safe while enjoying the benefits of online shopping:

  1. Read the Privacy Policy: Take the time to understand what data they are collecting and its possible use.
  2. Monitor Your Accounts: Regularly check your bank statements for unauthorised transactions.
  3. Use Strong Passwords: Keep your accounts protected with strong, unique passwords.
  4. Be Sceptical of Urgency: Do not let time-limited offers pressure you into making quick decisions.
  5. Check Reviews: Look for reviews and feedback from other customers about product quality and their shopping experience.
Key Takeaways

  • Cybersecurity experts have warned that online budget retailer Temu could be risking customers' data security.
  • The parent company PDD Holdings, now headquartered in Ireland, has a large user base with 1.2 million Australians using the app monthly.
  • Shoppers are advised to be cautious of the 'urgency trap' and to be aware of the quality of off-brand products that do not match leading brands' performance.
  • Temu insists that customer data is safe and their data practices align with industry standards, promising transparency and a commitment to privacy protection.

I have been using Temu for some time now - the website, not the app.
I have absolutely no complaints about their service. If you have an issue with a purchase, they deal with it immediately, and they refund you with no questions.
Also, a big plus, there are no postal charges with Temu.
The quality of their items is excellent, their delivery is efficient and quick, and their prices are brilliant.
Most of my friends and colleagues use them now and, personally, I have stopped using ebay as I find their prices too high and their postage costs too expensive.
I think this article has been prompted because other suppliers are feeling threatened, and has nothing to do with the quality, price or access to your data.
All the other sites have exactly the same systems, so why no questions about them?
This what competition is all about!

I am a Temu shopper and I love their clothes beautiful colours they feel great and wash well. I buy a size larger as I like a bit of room in my clothing not too snug. Prices are fantastic and if you have a problem they give you an instant refund no questions asked and I’ve never had to send the item back.

I have been buying from Temu for ages now. I admit some of the products I have received fell short of expectations but Temu refunded my money. Most of what I have purchased is fantastic quality. Just received Duplo like blocks for my granddaughter they fit with the real Duplo excellently and feel the same quality but so much more affordable. All online collect data, that is the world we live in. Just need to be aware and keep an eye on accounts etc.

Like many others have said, I am a regular TEMU shopper and 80% of my purchases over the past 3 or 4 years have been good quality, a few have been surprisingly excellent, especially the cowhide leather bags (except my wife and I now own 14 quality leather bags between us, which is a bit excessive, lol).
The reality is that if you buy online, your data is going to be used for profiling your shopping preferences and notifying you of things that 'they' feel you might like when you login to your TEMU account, or via emails. I have discovered a couple of nice surprises through their targeted marketing, so no complaints. It's just standard practice, and if you live your life in fear thinking 'other people' (code for auto-bots, not actual people) are 'stealing your data', you will just die of fear-generated cancer anyway. Just accept that it's now a normal part of everyday life. I actually prefer targeted advertising to the old random junk advertising we used to get.
Be sensible about it. Don't give out any financial or other important info to anybody that you didn't initiate an account or purchase with in the first place, even if they appear above board. It's very easy to check the requested details to authenticate them, mostly just by quickly calling the bank/company/organisation to confirm first. Do nothing on impulse just because of an implied sense of urgency. It's never too urgent to check first, after all, it is probably an email that was sitting unread in your inbox for hours before you even saw it, so not that urgent!
To conclude: The TEMU app and games are a bit annoying with all the gimmicks to suck you in. If you can, use a 'grown-ups' desktop computer to explore on TEMU. I am very happy to recommend them and most of the products are good to great quality, plus they are very quick to refund the few that are sub-standard for any reason. They are the Asian shopping site other competitors can only... ahem... WISH they were! lol.

Everywhere that I've read about these alleged bad things about Temu, all the replies to the stories have been positive about the company.🙂

So whoever started these stories and has got some sort of agenda against them, (because it's a Chinese company? 🤔) it hasn't worked. 😁

And if they were so bad, Google would have taken the app off their Play Store ages ago.

Actually, further to my previous post the other thing I've also noticed is that whenever these articles appear all the positive posts all seem to be written in the same vein. 🤔

Now I come to think of it more that seems more dodgy than the actual company!!!

I love shopping at Temu. I feel the post applies to all online shops. I found the Noni B franchise is way worse. They take so long to send anything. I am waiting for an order I sent in November 2023! I've asked for a refund, & have been told it is on the way. Temu is super quick with postage & refunds & I have liked all items I have bought

I love Temu, I found them after clicking on an Adv when looking for alternative hats and scarves to hide my Chemo induced baldness the Australian offerings were wildly expensive and I was not willing to pay upwards of $100.00 just for a scarf, found just what I was looking for at very cheap prices and have since purchased a great selection to compliment most of my clothing choices. after speaking with friends that I recommended the shopping site to it seems that the constant emails problem is from the APP, there is no problem if you don't download it and just shop as a casual customer,I only ever buy on-line using my PC not on my phone so I have no need of the APP The only emails I have received from them is confirmation of my order and estimated delivery time. I will continue shopping with them based on my happiness with the products received, I don't think that shopping with Temu is any different to Shopping on Ebay but each to their own.

I have bought from Temu with no problems. I have also bought from Innovations. The ONLY annoying thing that is a nuisance is the advertising I now get about the items I have already bought from Innovations. The adverts are on my MSN news whenever I open the internet. A similar one is for Temu and Temu comes up in this SDC news. I have never had an email from temu nor never see them on Facebook.

It sounds a lot like the popularity of Temu is making merchants who rip us off a little worried. Keeping safe is not rocket science … use the website and not the app! I am very happy with the things I have bought from Temu … nothing at all wrong with the quality.
same here! I recently started camping and needed a lot of things. Everything was good quality but half or less of the price elsewhere, including Amazon and kmart....

Yes, I have shopped many times with TEMU. There prices are incredible . Shipping is free and very fast compared to ebay. You just need to really check what You are purchasing. I did buy a seat cover that wasn't thick as it looked on the website. The told Me to keep the cover and just refunded Me the money. Where a delivery was a day longer than expected they gave me $5 credit... automatically ... I have never paid for postage - and all My packages come undamaged. Yes, I do get adverts for Temu on My computer but I don't mind looking at something I might want to purchase... Bugbuyer 68autobug

What a joke! Just how long have ALL our data and details been collected and stored by amazon and every other site that wants your personal info to keep you "safe"! Are they behind this sudden warning?? Perhaps because they're losing a lot of money now... they've been notoriously charging more for shipping than the item you're wanting to buy.

Temu bashing is a very popular sport. Amazon, Shein, Tik Tok - how about them? All on-line shopping is a risk. I've had 16 deliveries from Temu and happy with them all. Yes there is an increase in their ads but I was looking for a trailer on FB Market Place and I got bombarded with trailer ads from everywhere.
Just because something is cheap doesn't mean its inferior - often the price of something is reflected by how much mark-up the retailer puts on it.

I believe you are right! All of a sudden Temu is the baddie and the "big boys" are trying to stop them.

You are correct! Why? Who is behind all this Temu bashing.?

I have not bought from Tamu as yet. I have not done so as you have to become a member.and I don't know if I want to do that.

WELL, I can assure you that the products I have purchased are up to scratch. The clothing as far as I am concerned is VERY well made and the materials used are good. AND such pretty colours. At $15-$20 dollars I will still purchase as I do not have to feel I need to hang on to it How silly, we buy made in china here, what's the difference? I do not use the app I do it all on my PC. I do not have anything in my life that I wish to be private.
