Enjoy perfectly ripe avocados with Woolworths' new sticker labels!

Have you ever experienced the struggle of choosing the perfect avocado in the supermarket, only to take it home and be let down when you finally cut into it and discover it's either rock-hard or a mushy mess?

Well, worry no more because Woolworths has devised a brilliant solution that has the potential to transform our avocado shopping experience.

Gone are the days when you had to stand awkwardly in the produce section, squeezing avocados to judge their ripeness. Woolworths devised a brilliant solution by introducing 'Eat Now' and 'Eat Later' stickers for their avocados.

As simple as it sounds, the stickers are designed to let you know if an avocado is perfectly ripe and ready to be enjoyed immediately or if it needs a few more days to reach that desirable texture we all love.

'We understand the disappointment of cutting into an unripe avocado, a tale known too well with avocado lovers,' a spokesperson for the supermarket shared with a news outlet.

'Customers will now be able to buy their avos with confidence with the introduction of Eat Now stickers, which indicate the perfect ripeness today.'

'Reducing food waste in Australia remains a top priority for Woolworths, and the “Eat Now” concept is one of the many ways it's tackling food waste by bringing consumption time to top-of-mind,' the Woolworths spokesperson said.

This idea is implemented in specific areas, excluding the ACT, NSW, WA, and the NT. However, these regions are scheduled to be included in the upcoming phases.

Woolworths has also implemented a similar system for bananas, letting customers know the different ripeness stages of the fruit and further helping to reduce disappointment and waste.

As a bonus for avocado lovers, Woolworths has a special on avocados this week, with prices ranging from $1.30 to $1.70 per unit, depending on the location. These prices are valid from June 21, 2023, to June 27, 2023, and are subject to change.

But what about those who like to plan their meals and aren't quite ready for that ripe avocado today? Fear not; the 'Eat Later' labels signal that it will take 2-4 days until the fruit is ready to be enjoyed. This makes it easier for home cooks to pre-plan their meals and ensure they have the perfect avocado for their delicious creations at the right time.

While we’re on the topic, here are some helpful tips on proper storage to help make the most of your avocados. Store unripe avocados at room temperature on your kitchen counter, away from direct sunlight. Once they ripen, place the avocados in the refrigerator to slow down the ripening process and maintain their perfect texture for a few days.

Did you know that avocados are one of the few types of fruit that ripen off the tree? They were first cultivated several thousand years ago and have had quite the journey to your local supermarket. Spanish explorers introduced them to Europe in the 16th century, and today, avocados are a popular choice worldwide.

Besides their rich and creamy texture, avocados offer numerous health benefits, particularly for seniors. They're packed with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, fibre, and various vitamins and minerals, such as potassium, vitamin K, and folate. Incorporating avocados into your diet may help reduce the risk of heart disease and support cognitive function.

For those seeking inspiration on how to enjoy their perfectly ripe avocados, why not try making a refreshing avocado, cucumber, and feta salad? A creamy avocado chocolate mousse also might hit the spot for those craving something more indulgent!

I’d love it if there were a foolproof way of preventing people from squeezing avocados! It is so disappointing to buy what looks like a perfect avocado, only to find it covered in big, brown bruises when you open it up.

So will they employ special sticker sticker-onerers whose job it will be to go through every avocado and decide whether the current sticker is still the correct one and of not carefully peel off the sticker and replace it with the updated ripeness one?

So, who is going to decide which is which? AND Woolworths - so much more importantly for your customers - will the avos still get the ‘SQUEEZE TEST’ behind closed doors anyhow????

The stickers will probably help but I've found for us , I buy the odd bunch of avo's, keep a couple out and refrig the rest, then keep bringing one out as they ripen. It's not a perfect system but it works most of the time.
