End of an era: Beloved restaurant shuts down after four-decade run

For the past four decades, the tantalising aroma of freshly baked pizzas and hearty Italian dishes has wafted through a street in Melbourne, drawing in locals and visitors to the bustling neighbourhood hub of La Porchetta.

Since its modest inception, the iconic pizza restaurant has served as a beloved gastronomic landmark, a place of joyous gatherings, family celebrations, and a source of solace for those seeking comfort in the form of a cheesy slice or a rich plate of pasta.

However, in a turn of events that tugs at the heartstrings of many, La Porchetta announced its imminent closure, signalling the end of an era, but leaving behind a rich legacy of culinary delight and community spirit.

The Pantaleo family, who have been at the helm of the Carlton North establishment on Rathdowne St since 1985, broke the news on social media, leaving a community of loyal patrons in shock and disappointment.

‘A letter to our beloved staff members, patrons, and community members throughout the generations: We would like to inform you all that the original family will be moving on and closing the doors,’ the family said.

‘We are sending out our deepest gratitude towards everyone who has helped make La Porchetta Carlton what it is today.’

‘Your unwavering support for over 40 years has kept us going strong and made it even harder to make the decision to move on as we have grown so fond of serving all of you each and every day.’

‘It is the end of an era, but the legacy will live on forever through the memories.’

The last day of service for La Porchetta is Sunday, February 11.

The announcement was met with an outpouring of nostalgia and sadness from locals who have been frequenting the restaurant since its inception.

‘Still the best tortellini carbonara ever. Wouldn’t have made it through uni without you! Was dangerous living just around the corner in 1990 though! Thanks for the memories,’ one wrote.

‘Absolutely gutted, the best old style pizza and something on the menu for the whole family...end of an era,’ another said.

‘My boys loved pizza and pasta nights with you, not to mention all the sneaky gelatos they enjoyed. We are going to miss you guys, it’s a big loss to the village,’ a third wrote.

The story of La Porchetta began when Rocky Pantaleo and Felice Nania took over a run-down pizza shop in Carlton North.

Their passion for authentic Italian cuisine and commitment to quality transformed the humble pizza shop into a beloved local institution.

The success of the original restaurant led to the opening of multiple locations across Australia and New Zealand, although many have since closed down.

Currently, thirty-three locations remain in Australia, with four still operating in New Zealand.

While the closure of La Porchetta is undoubtedly a significant loss to the Carlton North community, the Pantaleo family's legacy will live on in the memories of those who had the pleasure of dining at the restaurant.

As they prepare to close the doors of the original La Porchetta branch for the last time, they leave behind a legacy of delicious food, warm hospitality, and a community of patrons who will undoubtedly miss their favourite pizza joint.

There were 10 green bottles sitting on the wall......first of many

I believe it's the same restaurant name at Broadbeach on the GC. It's still open. Thinking it's the same owner or a relative.
