Emergency Recall: Woolworths Pulls Popular Toiletry After Explosion Fears
- Replies 1
It looks like members who are fans of Jack The Barber Body Spray may have to find a new scent for a while, as the popular deodorant range has just been pulled from the shelves across the nation.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) revealed that the product's 150ml/90g cans, in scents called Rogue, Nomad, and Rebel, can be defective, as the base of the can is not properly constructed to handle extreme pressure and heat.
This poses a serious danger to consumers as the can could potentially explode and cause injury to people or property nearby if it's exposed to very high temperatures.
‘The base of the body spray can is not sufficiently constructed to deal with extreme pressure and could pop or explode,’ said the ACCC.
‘If the base of [the] can pops or explodes due to being exposed to extreme heat or pressure (for example, if left in a hot car) this could injure people or damage items in close proximity of the can.’
It's advised that the following batches of Jack the Barber range should all be disposed of immediately:
- Rebel (batch numbers 22H311 and 22F281),
- Rogue (batch numbers 22J181 and 22F301),
- Nomad (batch numbers 22I071 and 22F302).
These products were sold in Woolworths supermarkets from September 18 to December 20, 2022, and if you have any of these in your household, you're entitled to a full refund with a valid receipt.
In light of this body spray recall, it is a good time to reflect on the standards expected of consumer product manufacturers regarding their products’ safety. The ACCC has set out a set of standards and regulations to ensure consumers can be provided with safe products that meet their expectations.
Under the Australian Consumer Law, manufacturers have a responsibility to ensure their products are safe. It is expected that they produce a product that is safe to use as it has been intended, has adequate instructions and warnings, is of an acceptable quality, is fit for purpose and matches the description, sample or demonstration model.
Companies must also take into account any foreseeable risks to a consumer’s safety from other factors, such as the design of their product or the materials used to make it. Companies that fail to ensure their products meet national safety standards may face fines, bans or other penalties for putting the public at risk.
The ACCC has an online form where you can report unsafe products, with the option to do so anonymously, if you so wish.
For more information on how you can safely discard your cans of Jack the Barber, please contact the supplier on 02 9071 0420, or via email at [email protected]. You can also visit their official website www.jackthebarberformen.com for updated information as it becomes available.
Please note, if the aerosol can isn't empty, it should be disposed of through your council's hazardous waste program.
This isn’t the only health-related recall as of late. A popular medication was also recently recalled over a mislabelling error. You can read more on that here.
If you know anyone who may use this deodorant, please share this information with them! Stay safe out there, members!
