Elderly residents at risk as government's inaction leaves countless without homes

The plight of the elderly is as old as time, but in the bustling streets of Paddington, Sydney, it's taken a particularly distressing turn.

Elderly residents of two boarding houses face eviction as developers eye their homes for conversion into luxury apartments.

This situation has sparked a desperate call for intervention from the NSW government, as the most vulnerable in our society face displacement and an uncertain future.

The residents, many of whom are pensioners or living with disabilities, have been part of the Paddington community for decades.

For 80-year-old Sav Durac, the boarding house on Selwyn Street has been home for 56 years.

But now, he and 29 other men are grappling with the distress of eviction notices served by LFD Developments, who have plans to upscale their humble abodes into high-end living spaces.

The City of Sydney Council is challenging the developer in court, but the outcome will not prevent the eviction deadline of 1 February.

This legal battle is set to be a landmark case, testing the adequacy of state planning laws to safeguard privately owned affordable housing.

Yet, the verdict will come too late for the Selwyn Street residents.

The community's outcry has been loud, with advocates and residents accusing the NSW housing minister of failing to provide adequate support and alternative housing solutions.

The government's response has been deemed insufficient. Three months elapsed before Housing Minister Rose Jackson's office replied to community appeals for assistance.

The emotional toll is palpable. One resident's distress culminated in a week-long seclusion in his room, ending with hospitalisation.

This incident is a stark illustration of the broader anxiety and lack of support these men are enduring.

A local campaigner, Mike Mannix, has been leading efforts to assist the residents.

He fears the men will be thrust into unfamiliar environments, far from the community they know and love.

Finding safe, secure, affordable housing is daunting, especially in Paddington, where median weekly rents soar.

Homes NSW has set up hubs and information sessions to connect tenants with services.

Yet, the likelihood of these residents finding new homes in their cherished neighbourhood is slim.

Elaine Macnish, CEO of the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, acknowledges the challenge, citing the closure of boarding houses and rising costs as compounding pressures.

Initially reluctant to intervene, the City of Sydney Council has now resolved to explore the acquisition of the property, potentially with contributions from the City and the state.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore has directly appealed to Minister Jackson for state support if a community housing provider is able to purchase the site.

The broader issue at hand is the vulnerability of boarding house residents, who often find themselves in these accommodations as a step out of homelessness or while awaiting social housing.

The current State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP) is meant to protect affordable rental housing, but it needs to be proven inadequate, particularly for boarding houses.

Advocates like Ms Macnish are calling for a long-overdue review of the SEPP, initially slated for 2017.

As the clock ticks down for Selwyn Street residents, the need for immediate action and long-term reform has never been more apparent.

It’s disgusting and very sad, where will these men go where they will they ever feel safe again 😭
There was something on the news yesterday, I wasn’t really listening until I heard the words that the government could not house the thousands of immigrants coming here ! Sorry but the government need to STOP immigration until all people here have affordable housing. It’s going to take years to build enough housing now, that a lot of elderly won’t even live long enough to get one. What is this country coming too? They could put up prefabs like they did in the UK after the last war ? Or something similar. Also heard on the news that the Government rate yoga teachers as people we need here ! Come on are you joking !

At 84 and comfortably settled, my heart breaks for these residents. Cruelty comes in all forms. What does government want them to do? Die on the footpath? I see such waste in government spending time to redirect to our needy . Not a fan of public protest but this deserves one.

Sadly not joking. I dread finishing up like America.

I'm with you, stop immigration now, it's bad enough that some of them turn into gangs and terrorise their local communities, let alone them taking houses away from hard working Aussies or the elderly and disabled!!

Are these boarding houses privately owned?? or Govt. Maybe this is one time the Govt. should spend their money wisely and transfer staff from places are sitting doing nothing because they have contracts

Our country was made up of immigrants. Having said that I don t believe it should be stopped, but controlled, set an amount that can be handled.
I live in a large middle eastern community, their children born here, hard working people who pay taxes.
Just adding, anyone old enough to remember the mafia when many Italians settled here? Now that was gang violence. Great additions to the country now.

I know Paddington well. A lot of houses were heritage listed and I have seen the area filling with high rise units.

With Paddington so close to the CBD and not enough housing I understand that they need to knock down old buildings to allow to build accommodation for many more people.

The government should help relocate these men although I have heard the problem is also in that the men are not willing to move.

There really is alot of old places in Paddington that need to be demolished for safety.

Oh yeah forget Clover Moore she is more interested in spending money on artwork

Myself and my family are immigrants from the mid 60s, and back in the 70's I met some wonderful Vietnamese gentlemen at my bus stop every morning when I would go to work, they saved enough to buy a car and would pick me up from the stop until I stopped working there. These guys were in genuine need and worked damn hard for what they got in their new country.
I'm not talking about those "kind of people", i'm meaning the African migrants etc, now please don't think i'm racist because i'm not, i'm so far from it!
A lot of them start gangs and terrorise their communitys, a few years ago they went to one of our popular beaches and started beating innocent people.
The media had been told not to keep on reporting on them so we don't know even half of the problems our country has been having.
I embrace any hard working Aussie, no matter where they come from, being they're hard working and give back to their new country, but not those trouble makers whose parents don't do a thing to discipline them, or are to scared to.
Any sign of trouble and they should be deported along with their families no matter what country they came from!!

Yes, I agree, but I assume this was applied to so-called 'refugees"!
It's not the same as the refugees from WWII. The majority of refugees today are NOT actual refugees!!!
A lot are terrorists connected to various terrorist organisations, are intentionally placed among genuine refugees.
Many are even rewarded financially to both themselves and the families they leave behind. This has been the most effective way, for several years already, of spreading the sworn statement of Islam taking over the world.
Laugh if you will, or bury your head in the ground, but it is a fact!

Very true!!!!!

The managing director of LFD Developments is none other than Benjamin Lin, a Chinese opportunist, preying on the disadvantaged for his own gain. A leech of the highest order.

If you have read the Local Planning Application to the City of Sydney, you will find that "The application is recommended for refusal" and the reasons are as follows:-

• loss of affordable rental accommodation

• inadequate information and failure to address retention of affordable rental accommodation provisions of the Housing SEPP 2021

• heritage impacts

• visual privacy

• objections to proposed car stacker

Lets hope then that application is refused and the State Government for once grows some balls and looks after these men who reside there. Time for a bit of Aussie fight for this one.
