Elder widow finds herself caught in trouble involving payment scam

While technology has brought us closer together, it has also opened the door to a darker side.

Scammers prey on the vulnerable, often targeting less tech-savvy, such as our senior citizens.

Grace's story of a 91-year-old Perth resident is a stark reminder of the cunning tactics employed by these fraudsters and the importance of staying vigilant.

Grace's ordeal began with a phone call from someone who seemed to know an unsettling amount about her personal life.

The caller, who claimed to be from her bank, knew her full name and address and that she was a widow.

With such detailed information, it's no wonder Grace was convinced of the caller's legitimacy.

The scammer requested Grace purchase $2,000 of Apple gift cards from a local supermarket.

When she explained that her car was unavailable, the scammer promptly sent a taxi to the store.

It was a well-orchestrated ruse that played on her trust and willingness to help what she believed was her bank's effort to catch other scammers.

Grace only realised the scam at the checkout counter when a store employee recognised the signs of a scam and intervened.

The shock and embarrassment that followed were overwhelming for Grace, who felt foolish and gullible for falling into the trap.

But the truth is, these scammers are professionals at manipulation, often leaving even the most cautious individuals feeling vulnerable.

After the ordeal, Grace was stranded at the shopping centre; her phone battery was dead, and the taxi was gone.

Only through the kindness of neighbours could she return home to her anxious family.

The aftermath involved securing her bank accounts and dealing with the emotional toll of the experience.

Upon being notified, the Commonwealth Bank was supportive and took measures to ensure Grace's financial security.

They also highlighted the sophistication of modern scams and the importance of their customers remaining vigilant.

The bank's CallerCheck feature is one such tool that can help verify the legitimacy of a caller claiming to be from the bank.

Consumer Protection Commissioner Trish Blake didn't mince words when describing the scammers, calling them 'absolute mongrels' for taking advantage of an elderly woman.

She warned that if someone calls out of the blue asking for help to catch a scammer, it's likely a scam itself.
Key Takeaways
  • A 91-year-old Perth widow named Grace was scammed into attempting to purchase $2,000 worth of gift cards after a scammer impersonating a bank employee convinced her she was assisting in catching other scammers.
  • Grace was instructed not to communicate with anyone and was taken via taxi, arranged by the scammer, to a local supermarket to buy the gift cards, only to be informed by the cashier that it was a scam.
  • The Commonwealth Bank, mentioned in the scam, stated it would never ask customers to buy gift cards and has introduced a CallerCheck feature for customers to verify legitimate calls from the bank.
  • The WA Consumer Protection Commissioner branded the scammers 'absolute mongrels' and reminded the public that only scammers would ask for help in catching other scammers, advising them to hang up on such calls.

i keep getting these electricity comparison teams calling me.I do not have a smart phone which may warn me about spam.I never seem to have the right electricity supplier as far as they are concerned.I suppose i should hang up,I like to lead them on.As far as answering only numbers i recognize .if you have somebody in hospital you never know whether to answer a call in case there are problems.I am a carer for a couple of friends and it makes things awkward when they are at a medical establishment or what ever and they may be trying to contact me about any problems. These so called comparison teams are very shrude and can swap around and use 07 02 08 or 03 04 numbers to trick you.

A couple of years ago, I had some foreign jerk pretending to be from Amazon, talking about an unpaid account. I told him that I was Senior Sergeant <insert fake name> from the Australian Federal Police and he had reached a secure number and the call was being actively traced.

Well, for the next minute or so was non stop apologies from him. I ended the call with a heartfelt "F**K OFF!"

Many years ago before l became wise to scammers l also had a call from ‘Amazon’. They knew my previous 2 credit card numbers and said they needed my new card details. After 20 minutes on the phone and him asking me to send money, l finally hung up after telling him what an evil person he was

There seems to be a greater influx of these low-life bottom feeders, I don't answer any calls I don't know the number, I block the numbers, after a while they seem to stop, and then they start another round of scams, technology can be great but unfortunately it seems to be too damn easy and becoming easier for these scumbag father rapers to use this "fantastic" technology against individuals
I try and do the same with these calls. These people are anything but dumb. They are very smart, but have turned their talents to these activities because of the huge financial rewards. And it only going to get worse, with the growth of AI.

If in doubt over a call, at least DO NOT press any buttons or keys on phone or computer - then hang up and if still in doubt phone the place the call is SUPPOSED to have come from and see if it is from them or not!
Methods of dealing with "SCAM" callers. 1. When receiving a call from a number you do not recognise, select the call, but do not speak. If the call is simply generated by a scam system, the call will terminate. After the call, enter the number into your "call block" list. Sometimes for a bit of fun, I answer such calls with my standard response....."Bert's Brickyard!. How many bricks would you like to order?" They hang up.

I'm the same, I have to answer unrecognised calls because my oncologist and various other hospital departments need to call me, if I ignored them I might miss crucial appointments.

A few minutes ago I received notification of a group chat. I checked the profile, a cartoon of Daffy Duck which exists on my phone. I don't use any profile. Apparently, I started this group chat. I don't do social media, or any group, not even family. I 'left' the chat. Don't know what happens next.
What's new on my phone? Yesterday I updated Acrobat Reader. I declined various business apps but I'm bombarded with New File notifications.

My sure fire way at the moment to make scammers hang up real quick is to answer my phone with "4BH is my station" This radio station in Qld has what is called a 'Payday' where providing your are registered they may ring you to give you free money but only if the first thing you say is their catch phrase. Although this only happens before 9.00am on a Mon-Fri morning, I will answer my phone at any time of the day/night to unknown numbers including weekends with the radio stations catch phrase. I have found that if the call is a genuine one (hospital etc) then they will stay on the line but if they're not then they hang up real fast.

Has anybody else noticed that there seem to be certain times these father rapers are more active, I get at least 3 calls around 4-5pm, blocked numbers, rang company they were supposed to be from, still keeps happening always with different numbers, now I turn my phone off between these times, also told one lot that the woman they were trying to contact had passed away, their response was "Are you a relative",I lost it and replied that they had in fact reached the Dead Zone, was then asked "where that is", my answer "that is where scammers like you should live, ended call, reported to Scamwatch, a week later the whole scenario started again, now I just don't answer any calls from numbers that I don't know, I figure that if it really is legit a message can be left, I have also turned off my voicemail, two "companies" Temu and Shein send emails daily to let me know about the great prize I have won, never dealt with Shein, but I did have an order from Temu, extremely poor quality, I now consider Temu to be a mob not to be trusted, but life goes on, would be wonderful to continue without these mongrels

I have had at least a dozen orders from Temu and I love the stuff iv'e received, I got a whole new summer wardrobe for under $60, plus winter stuff when it was cold. Iv'e brought my daughter and grandaughter things they say are wonderful.
I haven't tried Shein but I have had one order from Ali Express, which is the same as the two above.
But I don't play the games on Temu, I use a computer and not my phone.
I also pay with Afterpay so my payments are spread over six fortnightly payments which make it so easy to get the things I want.
Temu are good with sending refunds, one order I had went to the wrong house so they replaced it and said if the other order turned up to keep it as a gift, it turned up the very next day so I sent one to my daughter.

A couple of years ago my very smart wife kept a scammer online for about 40 minutes by playing the 'dumb grandma' card. Making him repeat himself numerous times pretending she couldn't hear him or understand what he was saying, 'accidentally' hanging up on him mid sentence to make the scammer call back, pretending she was following his instructions on a computer (she wasn't) then telling him the computer suddenly closed down and he would have to start again, etc. etc. etc. It was hillarious, great entertainment. Eventually scammer hung up, and we hoped we slowed down his scamming call to other people for a while.

Pierogi the scambuster does that all the time, he pretends he's an elderly woman all the while he's hacking into their systems to take all of the money back they have stolen and return it to their rightful owners, he's on Youtube and very entertaining..

My partner also plays along with them sometimes and they can get very abusive, telling him he'd f***** his deceased mother etc 😂

I once played with them myself and it went something like this, my partner was in hysterics.

A few years ago we had the "Have you been in an accident" calls.
Well I decided to have a bit of fun, it went like this:

Caller: "Hello, my name is *****, i'm calling from 'some insurance company'.
Have you had an accident in the last year?"

Me: "Why yes I have, how did you know?"

Caller: "We know everything, can you please tell me what happened."

Me: "I was driving behind Holdens, taking a short cut when I hit a cow."

Caller: "You hit a car?"

Me: "No, I hit a cow, you know, Moooooo."

Caller: "Hold on while I get my supervisor."

Supervisor: "Hello, have you had an accident in the last year?"

Me: "Yes I have, I already told your other person that."

Supervisor: "Could you please explain what happened."

Me: "I was driving behind Holdens and a cow came charging out of the bushes and I accidently hit it."

Supervisor: "You hit a car?"

Me: "No, I hit a COW, you know, mooooooo."

Supervisor: "And how did that happen?"

Me: "Well I was driving along taking the short cut when this cow came rushing out of the bushes and I accidently hit it, I think I might have killed it."

Supervisor: "Then what happened."

Me: "The farmer came running through the bushes, saw his dead cow on the road and started to yell at me. I tried to explain it to him but it didn't help when I vomited over his shoes, i'd had a bit to much to drink you see, hense why I took the short cut.
I tried to alert him to the fact that a car had pulled over and the two men that witnessed the carnage jumped out and loaded the dead cow onto a trailer, one of them looked exactly like the local butchers son."

Supervisor: beep beep beep beep.
