Using a hair curler

The best way to create head-turning and salon-worthy curls at home is a great curling iron.

When choosing the best curling iron for you, you should look for one that:
  • is easy to use and maneuver
  • heats up quickly so you can curl your hair fast
  • doesn’t damage your hair
  • and of course, should also fit within your budget
After a quick look at Kmart, we found this $16 hair curler that you might want to consider. If you’re ever in the mood for soft, tumbling waves or big, tousled curls, this curler will surely take care of all your hair styling woes right at the comfort of your own home.

However, it’s not wireless and automatic so you may have a bit of a hard time using the device. Plus, the open heating rod may accidentally burn you along the way (if you aren’t careful).

So, you may want to take a look at this other option: Kmart’s $49 Auto Curler.

This gadget is being raved about by several beauty gurus online, saying that it’s just as good as designer models, such as the Wylera Dreamwave curler that goes for $169.

It’s also wireless, fully automatic, and the heating rod is covered so you no longer have to worry about accidentally hurting yourself while using the gadget.

Braiding

Aside from using curling machines, did you know that you can also curl your hair by simply braiding it?

Start by washing your hair (or dampening them with a spray), then wipe them off to remove the excess water. For softer curls, make single or two braids whereas for smaller ones, tie your hair into numerous thin braids. Make sure that your hair is still partially wet when they are tightly braided!

Then, leave them braided for a few hours (or overnight, if you prefer). Once you get the braids off, you can just comb your curls using your fingers.

Tying a bun

This one is almost the same as the previous method.

Start by washing your hair (or dampening them with a spray), then wipe them off to remove the excess water. Then comb your hair thoroughly to avoid tangles.

For loose curls, make a single bun at the top of your head and secure it with a hair tie. For wavier curls, make two separate buns at the top of your head by parting your hair then secure them with bobby pins or hair ties.

Make sure that your hair is still partially wet when you put them in a bun! After a few hours, unwrap the bun to unravel your new fabulous curls.

Using socks

This method might seem a bit silly to try, but people are saying that it is effective!

As usual, start by washing your hair (or dampening it with a spray), then wipe them off to remove the excess water.

Then, using a long sock, interweave parts of your hair with it and secure the end with a hair tie. Repeat this process until all leftover hair is wrapped around the sock.

We recommend doing this curling trick at night just before you sleep so that no one can see you with several socks attached to your hair! After letting them sit overnight, untwine your hair gently and reveal your new perfect curls.

We bet people will ask if you had them done at a salon!

Hair Rollers

Now, this wouldn’t be an article about curls if we didn’t mention our old favourite hair rollers! Who here still uses these? They are an extremely effective way of curling your hair without damaging it with heat.

To use these rollers, dampen your hair with some water or some leave-in conditioner spray, then separate your hair into small sections and use one roller to every section (how big each section is, depends on how thick or thin your hair is). Then, slowly roll each section until the roller is sitting on the top of your head. Do this until all of your hair is on a roller and let it sit for a few hours or overnight.

If, over time, you have lost your beloved rollers, you can still grab a pack of 16 from Kmart for only $6! One of the cheapest methods so far. Aren’t all the old school methods the best?

My hair is straight. Several attempts over the years have all failed to produce even a kink in it. I've grown, through necessity, to prefer straight hair.:(:)

My mother used white clean strips of rags (cloth)to curl my hair, this was in the 1950’s, nice and soft while you slept, and looking at old photos, was affective, nice curls.
