Eek! Popular shampoo recalled from Woolies and Chemist Warehouse over bacteria scare

Lathering up our hair with shampoo is a part of everyone’s hygiene routine, but what if we told you that your beloved hair product could be putting you at risk? It sounds bizarre, we know, but in this case, it’s highly likely.

According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), bottles of A’kin Mild & Gentle Shampoo Fragrance-Free & Hypoallergenic are being pulled from supermarket shelves across the country as they may be contaminated with ‘Enterobacter Gergoviae’.

The recall concerns 500-millimetre bottles of the shampoo, which cost $26.95 at some retailers.

While this type of bacteria is generally harmless to healthy people, those with immune system deficiencies or bacterial allergies may become severely sick with direct exposure.

The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment in Germany previously warned that the bacterium can enter the body via open wounds or mucous membranes.

Dr William Schaffner stated: ‘The only people that need to be concerned about this are those who are immune compromised or have open sores or cuts.’

The ACCC added that the recall was for batch number ‘AW2D01’. This can be found on the back of the bottle, above the barcode. Aside from that, no other batches were affected.

The shampoo was sold at Woolworths, David Jones, Priceline, Chemist Warehouse, and other pharmacies, with the affected batch believed to be on sale until September 15.

‘Consumers should stop using the product and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice. For further information, consumers can contact McPherson's Customer Service on 1800 651 146.’ the consumer watchdog advised.

I only buy FLEX Shampoo and FLEX Conditioner from The Reject Shop. I have been using this product for 20+ years. There is no Shampoo that beats FLEX. Even if I get free (which I don't) :D other Shampoo's, I will not take it. My entire family is using only FLEX ♥

Thanks for the warning. I don't use this brand but it's always good to know of recalls.
