Eat This Delicious Food Before Bed and You Could Stop Snoring Tonight!

Are you or your partner tired of the nightly symphony of snores that disrupts your peaceful slumber? Well, it might be time to say cheese – and not just for a photo! Surprising as it may sound, indulging in a bit of cheddar or your favourite fromage before bedtime could be the key to a quieter night, according to recent research published in the Sleep Medicine journal.

Cheese: The Unexpected Hero in the Battle Against Snoring

The study, which delved into the dietary habits of 400,000 individuals in the UK, has uncovered a rather unexpected ally in the fight against snoring: cheese. Contrary to the old belief that dairy products could exacerbate snoring by increasing mucus production, this research suggests that regular cheese consumption is associated with a 28 per cent lower risk of developing sleep apnoea, a condition that is often the culprit behind severe snoring.

Sleep Apnoea: The Hidden Culprit of Snoring

Sleep apnoea, particularly its most common form known as obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), affects nearly one billion people worldwide. It occurs when the throat muscles relax excessively during sleep, leading to narrowed airways and interrupted breathing. These pauses in breathing can result in loud snoring and a less restful night's sleep. In the UK alone, up to 3.9 million people are estimated to have moderate or severe OSA, and it’s believed that many more cases go undiagnosed.

The Diet-Sleep Connection: An Overlooked Link

The connection between diet and sleep disorders has not been extensively explored until now. The researchers from Chengdu University in China have highlighted the importance of this relationship, suggesting that it could be crucial in managing sleep-related issues. They propose over 20 different ways in which cheese – whether it’s the sharp tang of gorgonzola, the creamy richness of camembert, or the robust flavour of manchego – could potentially lower the risk of sleep apnoea. Among these are the potential for cheese to increase levels of testosterone and lower blood pressure, both of which could positively impact sleep quality.

The Power of Cheese: Benefits Beyond Taste

High blood pressure is a known risk factor for sleep apnoea , and if cheese can help manage blood pressure levels, it stands to reason that it could also help reduce the risk of developing sleep apnoea. This is a tantalizing prospect for cheese lovers who also happen to be snorers or those who share a bed with one.

A Slice of Cheese: The Key to Sweet Dreams?

Before you start piling your nighttime snack plate with all sorts of cheeses, it’s important to remember that moderation is key. Cheese can be high in fat and calories, so while it may have potential benefits for snorers, it should still be consumed as part of a balanced diet. Additionally, individual responses to dairy can vary, so it’s worth monitoring how your body reacts to nighttime cheese indulgence.

Is this applicable for women also....the article states that it may increase testosterone levels, suggesting that it may be aimed as a cure for men.? My ex used to snore after a number of wines before she retired to bed, nothing that a spare pillow wouldn't fix.😂

Fancy that - I do indulge in a piece of cheese if I find it hard to get to sleep - I think it is something to do with the lactose in the cheese. As I am a great aficionado of cheeses this is now my excuse for having a nibble each night!🐀:giggle:
