Driving on the wild side: Car's wrong-way stunt leaves commuters in shock!

As the hustle and bustle of the week fades into the distance over the streets of Sydney, drivers embark on leisurely journeys, soaking in the sights and sounds of the urban landscape.

Amidst the tranquillity, there's a sense of freedom and relaxation, offering a serene and uninterrupted journey for those behind the wheel.

However, this scene was stopped by this bewildering moment captured on one motorist’s dashcam.

In the twilight of a Sunday evening, a white Subaru SUV, out of place on the Camden Valley Way charged like a rogue elephant against a current of metal and asphalt giants.

The shocking moment captured on dashcam and posted to social media has since sparked a public outcry and a stern police investigation.

‘Okay, what the hell do you call this?’ said the motorist who captured the footage last Sunday evening, 3 March.

‘S***, he doesn’t even realise’

The video was posted on social media with the caption, ‘If this was you today, Camden Valley Way, Gregory Hills near Bunnings at 5:50 pm, please hand your licence in.’

Comments flooded the post expressing outrage from the viewers.

‘Get off the road, mate,’ one commenter said.

‘Probably doesn’t have a licence,’ replied another.

‘I’ve seen so many people do this. It’s common and scary,’ a third added.

‘Literally, last night, the same thing [happened] at the same spot! The old guy turned out of Turner Rd, but luckily, a police car stopped him,’ another one recalled.

One viewer expressed their concern, saying, ‘What a f*******. Could have caused a big head-on crash.’

Another chimed in, ‘At this point, this person didn’t get their licence out of a cereal box.’

However, amidst the outraged comments, some expressed sympathy towards the driver in question.

‘Really, maybe he was from the country and took the turn accidentally and went, “s***”. He was probably more scared than anyone. At least, he/she drove slowly with their hazards on. People should be nicer,’ one said.

‘Maybe the long grass on the median strip obscures the fact that it is a dual carriageway? It is a very wide roadway, and he was driving on the left and not actually driving badly—just on the wrong side. It happens,’ another wrote.

A spokesperson from the NSW Police reportedly said that officers did not know about the incident, but will conduct an investigation and ‘determine if an offence has been committed’.

‘It is rare, but not uncommon, for vehicles to be driven on the incorrect side of the road,’ the spokesperson said.

‘Some of these incidents can be attributed to driver error, a medical condition, [or] changes in road signage.’

The spokesperson from the police department further mentioned that in accordance with the Australian Road Rules, ‘the offence of “not keeping left of median strip—motor vehicle” carries a penalty of $387 and three demerit points.’

Recently, a hefty fine was imposed on another motorist after committing a risky act despite multiple warning signs and barriers.

Another driver was also fined more than $5,000 following a reckless driving stunt on Rainbow Beach.

Incidents like these remind us of the delicate dance conducted daily on our roadways, where safety depends on the choreography of millions of individuals following a collective rhythm.

Amidst our busy lives and rapid vehicles, let this be a wake-up call of the importance of road safety and the shared duty we all hold when seated behind the steering wheel.

I did it myself over 40 years ago in Canberra. Didn't know the area at all at the time and missed the signage. It happens. He obviously realised hence having hazards on and driving slowly. Pretty sure if it had happened to any of the driver's online critics they'd wonder why such a fuss was being made.

Probably some Tourists or newbie to the country who hasn't bother to understand our road rules and what side of the road we drive on. Am a firm believer that if you wish to drive in any country first and foremost you should have to pass their full driving test.

The trouble is not everywhere conducts viable driving tests some countries just give the driving license for less than necessary

Me too none of this just transferring your home town license to an international one so you can drive here without first learning our rules. That would take so many bad drivers off our roads.

Ah well, a long time ago in the USA.........I avoided getting shot by the police when I got out of my car to apologise.................Keep your hands on the steering wheel next time, bud!

Years ago I was with my sister and she did the same thing. We were from the country, went into the Newcastle area and on the way out she didn’t realise the road was 4 lanes and turned into the wrong lane. Lucky for us it wasn’t busy. And we did find a break in the median strip where we could go onto the right side of the road. It was a very scary situation to be in for both of us. Mistakes like this can happen, people just need to have patience and not make the situation worse for the driver in the wrong lane by trying to intimidate them by words or actions.

Maybe the signage should be larger and more definite. No everyone can see signs if they are behind foliage either.
And not everyone who drives on Aussie roads can read the signs and/or understand them if pictures. Good reason for some people, especially tourists who don’t speak English to have to pass a driving test before being let loose on our roads.

Correct, every year when we would go to America my husband would get an International Drivers Licence and it does get a bit hairy at times driving on the opposite side of the road especially when you are turning into another street you always tend to go to the left of the road instead over there its to the right side.

Yes;those damnable right-hand turns into the main street and those wretched Americans driving three abreast on the wrong side of the road, including that unmarked cop car! Foreigners! They should have known better! Now if I had been riding that elephant they would have got out of my lane really quickly!

Once again your extreme racism is on display. Seen plenty of this in Australia by white (old and young) men.
I gather that camel driving is quite a sport in some parts of Australia. Elephants; too dry between water-holes, and they probably wouldn't eat eucalyptus leaves anyway.

Australians can read? Not judging by those speed restriction signs and the money the cops make out of Australians driving a few km too quickly..........
