Driver catches rare wildlife moment—‘absolute fly kick’ leaves everyone stunned

A seemingly ordinary Sunday night took a bizarre turn when a driver found himself in the middle of a truly unexpected encounter.

What unfolded next was far from your typical late-night drive home.

The strange scene that greeted him left many wondering: was this some kind of wild action movie or just an Aussie wildlife showdown?

A driver was left stunned when he stumbled upon a bizarre scene in the middle of a Canberra cul-de-sac on a Sunday night.

Riley Eli Jones had just turned onto his street when he was confronted with two brushtail possums in the midst of what appeared to be an intense fight.

At first, Jones thought one of the animals was injured due to the way it was moving, but upon closer inspection, he realised it was just two possums engaging in a casual brawl.

‘My first thought was it was an injured animal because of the way it was moving,’ he said.

‘But then when I sort of slowed down [I realised], oh, okay, no, there’s just two possums just having a nice, casual fight in the middle of the street.’

He quickly pulled out his phone to capture the unusual moment and send it to his family.

‘Just because it was a bit interesting,’ he said.

The footage showed the possums standing face-to-face in the headlights, each with their hands raised near their face, ready for the next move.

Then, without warning, one of the possums leapt at the other in what appeared to be a perfectly timed fly kick.

‘As I was getting close to them with the car, they sort of stopped, but then, as you can see in the video, [it] reignited the spark when one of them just did an absolute fly kick onto the other one,’ Jones recalled.

‘It was very quick. I never knew that they were capable of such moves, to be honest.’

Jones was grateful he started filming when he did, as he would have missed the impressive manoeuvre otherwise.

The possums continued to tussle on the ground for several seconds, swinging back and forth, before darting off the road and into nearby bushes.

‘I’m sure they continued their fight elsewhere,’ Jones said with a chuckle.

The 28-year-old explained that he was no stranger to hearing possums scuffling on his roof or in the trees, but never expected to see them battling it out on the street at night.

And, judging by the response online, it seemed many Aussies were equally surprised by the rare street showdown.

When Jones’ mum posted the video online, it quickly went viral, gaining almost 100,000 views.

People were left amused by the possums’ ‘impressive’ fighting skills, with many commenting on the unusual sight.

‘Fighting on the road is so Australian,’ one woman joked.

‘This happens up in my roof cavity all the time. They’re cute looking but fight all the time,’ another person complained.

‘7pm I’ll meet you on the street and we shall sort it out once and for all!’ another person quipped.

Brushtail possums, which are known for being solitary and nocturnal, often engage in noisy fights over territory or mating.

They are an introduced pest in NZ. So it is open season all year round. In Rotorua, there is a shop that Americans love, as you can buy a lot of different possum fur articles. Especially the South Island ones, as they are a darker colour, verging on black. Also possum meat is supposed to be like chicken. Haven`t eaten it, but my Son and his Mate, would go camping, and catch a possum or 2. Cook it over a camp fire. Don`t know how well cooked. But nearly 50 years later he is still very much alive.
