Went to the drive-in with a hot date, but didn't check the movie, and the movie, Battle of Britain was all killing and destruction, and we both felt quite miserable by the end of the movie. Didn't get a second date.

My first visit to the drive in was as a young girl with an aunt, uncle, and their 3 kids, all crammed in a vw. We saw They’re a Weird Mob, or whatever it was called. Very enjoyable night out, shared hot chips at intermission. Was summer so very hot in the car, mosquitoes gave us hell if we had the windows down. Us kids slept all the way home. Hubby and I went to the drive in when we were courting several times, but like Suzanne rose we never saw much of the movies, we must have fallen asleep too. I remember carloads of young people driving in and a couple of extras hopping out of the boots after they got in. Panel vans and station wagons would reverse up and families would lie in the back, or couples would canoodle in the back, guess they never saw much of the movie either. I also remember seeing people drive off with the speakers attached, didn’t do the speakers much good, and often left a dent on the car. They usually just kept driving, the cord on the speaker would break and it would fall or be thrown on the ground. It was mayhem at the end with everyone trying to exit at once, there was never anyone directing the cars at the drive ins we went to, impatient drivers just forced their way in and cut across the traffic and didn’t give a hoot. Quite a few dingles happened in the rush to get out. We still have 1 drive in about an hour from where we live, it is the 1 hubby and I went to over 50 years ago, has closed and reopened a few times and changed hands a few times. Now it only operates periodically, it will have a movie marathon night with several movies showing, people can go to all or just 1 or 2, whatever they like. Our son has taken the grandkids a few times and they enjoyed it.

Went to the drive in at Bass Hill as a 14 year old in the boot of an Austin 1800.

Saw "The Getaway" which was R rated, hence the boot. The driver even removed his P plates just in case we were denied admission.

I got some funny looks as I emerged from the boot!

The nights at Taren Point drive in were a hoot! "Case Of The Smiling Stiffs" was showing and there were more cars parked outside the drive in than inside.

Young boys getting a glimpse of bums and titties for free!
