Now here’s something you don’t see every day.

At least, not anymore!

Who remembers when drive-in theatres such as this one were all the rage? I’ve been told that at the height of their popularity, it was always a mad scramble to get a spot before other people went in. Then there are also the stories of people smuggled in through the boot or just covered with blankets.

Ah — and the various gimmicks when it came to seats! Some parked their cars in reverse, and some were even said to bring pillows and mattresses, all for the sake of a comfortable movie-watching experience. And don’t even get us started on the action in the backseats… Okay, not going there! 😉

How about you? What memories of drive-in theatres do you have?

My greatest memory of Drive-in theatres is that as young teenagers we never had much money so we would put 3 people in the Boot of the car and we all would pay for one and get 3 in for nothing.

I use to work at the local drive-in on the trolley that went around the cars selling drinks, ice cream& all other stuff as a mobile shop

I live in Charters Towers 130km south west of Townsville, and we still have a Drive In. There is 2 screens and they have movies on every weekend. Not as popular as it once was but a good number of people line up each week.

My first visit to a drive in was with my aunt and uncle and their 3 kids to see We’re a Weird Mob. Later on my future husband and I used to go on dates to the drive in. This was back in the days of having the speakers on posts next to every car park, the speakers had to be hung on the car window so you could hear the show. Not sure we actually saw too much of the shows, like most young couples there we spent most of the night canoodling. Oh, the joys of young love.

I did the same at Dundas Drive In 1957/8 . Used to enjoy taking home left over hamburgers when we finished.

I went on my push 26 er bike.

Before we were married, my husband-to-be and I took his mother and young brother to the drive in. It was a movie called Virgin Soldiers. We thought it was about rookie soldiers, but NO!! It was about soldiers trying NOT to be virgins anymore. My mother-in-law spent most of the movie with her hands over my young brother-in-law's eyes!!
