Double-deck buses​

Who remembers riding these old double-deck buses? This photo shows brand-new Albion double-deckers fresh from Clyde Engineering in Granville after WWII. They were a familiar sight around the city, taking passengers to school, Taronga Zoo, and the Easter Show. And let’s not forget the Brookvale depot in the ’60s!

Living in Waverley, Sydney's Eastern Suburbs there was no train service in the 60's so I hopped on 2 buses to get to school. I remember how hot they were in summer with lovely vinyl seating. But they got us around and of course there was a conductor who took care of tickets and signalled all clear to move off safely to the driver. Most kids loved riding on the top deck - the view was better!

But when I did. I raced straight up to the top deck!

My husband was a driver of these taking tourists around the Gold Coast. I remember once he told me he had an accident in one when he tried to take a short cut under a bridge that was too low to take the bus under it.

When l lived in Ilkley UK we had a school bus to take us to school in Ben Rhydding but it just had one pick up point and by the time l would walk there l could be nearly half way to school so l walked.
We had excursions to Blackpool and other seaside places everyone singing as we drove along to see what we called ''the lights'' which were switched on at night to show illuminations of Disney characters and others stretching for about a mile high in the air along the coast line. We had to transfer to a double decker bus with the roof off to see them.
Can any other English member remember this and l wonder if they still do it?

In the winter people would sprinkle the ashes on the ice to give them traction. A few people in the UK had the idea of doing and driving as East as possible then ship to Fremantle and drive to Sydney via Adelaide, Melbourne I wonder how many came to fruition? I know ours didn't

For a five year old, the top deck was a bugger to get up to then back down!

The old Albion buses were replaced by the squarer Leyland Atlantean buses in the 1970s.

I can remember my mother organising a trip to Blackpool from Coventry for the day to see the Blackpool Lights but these only were there for a short few weeks over the Christmas Holidays. I don't think they do the lights anymore.
I also remember after the Coventry Blitz in 1940 when everything was virtually wiped out, as well as buses, they brought in some topless double deckers as an emergency measure. It got very wet if you sat on the top deck when it rained!!

l was in Lingfield Surrey when part of the childrens home l was in got hit by a flying bomb prompting my mum to take me home.
l think l have said this before but on a previous visit a cinema l wanted to go was hit by a bomb right where we would have been sitting as the person we were with had bad eye sight and always sat right at the front. We had tossed a coin and l lost l was only young but l remember it clearly .Just fate and wasn't meant to happen
