Do you shop at Coles? You need to know about this major issue affecting select cards!

We've all been there at some point—standing in the bustling checkout line, only for our hearts to sink when we hear the dreaded, 'Sorry, there seems to be an issue with your card.'

Adding to this list of technological hiccups, a recent incident at Coles further demonstrated the unpredictability of the digital age.

Recently, Coles supermarket highlighted a significant problem affecting selected MasterCards, particularly for customers aligned with Westpac.

Westpac MasterCard holders can no longer select their desired account type (cheque, savings, or credit) when making payment at the checkout.

And that's not all—this situation has barred these customers from withdrawing cash at the Coles registers, leaving them high and dry with their transactions.

Quoting one disgruntled customer's recent Facebook post: ‘When is Coles going to allow cash out for Westpac customers at their stores?’

‘It’s been over a month now that you’re “fixing the problem”.’

This is a clear and understandable frustration. After all, lacking the flexibility for cash-out facilities is a serious concern.

Acknowledging the inconvenience caused, a representative from Coles stated, 'We recently identified a technical issue that is affecting a small number of MasterCard users ability to select their account for payment.’

‘We are in the process of rolling out a fix across our stores and appreciate our customers' patience while we rectify the issue.’

While the issue ensues, it brings to mind the importance of carrying alternative payment methods while shopping. A spare card, just enough cash, and if you're technologically inclined, setting up mobile payments can be handy too.

According to our sources from 7NEWS.com.au, there's hope in sight. The problem, which has already persisted for over a month, should be resolved within the week. So, bear with Coles a little longer, dear readers.

Stay updated with your nearby Coles for any news. If you need help, call Coles' customer service. If you're using a Westpac card and have issues, let Westpac know.

Digital payment glitches: A look back
In the past, technology hiccups have troubled shoppers. Woolworths faced an IT glitch; ALDI's system went cash-only temporarily, and the 2018 Visa card issue inconvenienced many.

Despite rapid technology adoption by stores, these glitches remind us of simpler transaction times. It's worth noting: always be prepared with some backup change or a secondary card!

Nevertheless, everyday technology presents its unique challenges. Although the Coles glitch can be particularly frustrating, the advantages of digital transactions remain evident.
Key Takeaways

  • Coles supermarket has identified a major issue with payments made by certain MasterCard customers.
  • Particularly, customers who have MasterCards with Westpac are unable to select their account type—cheque, savings or credit—at checkout.
  • These affected customers are also unable to withdraw cash at Coles registers, in addition to payment issues.
  • A Coles representative has acknowledged the issue and stated that they are working on a solution and that the issue should be rectified in stores this week.

Cash is king - pay with cash only. Scrap the digital currency !

Pay with my smart watch, easy. No card to loose or misplace. Small amount of cash in bag just in case
It's just as easy.for there to be a glitch with your smart watch as with your card.
There is always going to be problems with cards,. I went thru a period when my card constantly kept saying "insufficient funds" when I had several thousand dollars on said card.
It was never discovered what the problem was and, of course, it took 10 days to get a new card. So we all have to have a backup card, what load of bullshit.
So much for the cashless society.

Doncha just love technology....NOT!
Big W had free wifi issues in my local store today - i couldn't get their app to load while instore on it. went down the other end of the shopping centre and hooked onto Coles free wifi and had no worries. The Big W app actually sucks as it doesn't have everything the website has so ended up having to wait til i got home to look up the item the store was out of and order it on there as i didn't have time to get on the website and log in on there - not that buying something over free wifi is totally safe either but still i ended up being able to buy it once i got home on my own wifi.
