Do you know that this Coles trick can get you sale prices on out-of-stock items?

Have you ever been through the aisle of your local Coles supermarket and found that the discounted item you wanted was out of stock? It can be so frustrating!

But the good news is, there’s still a way you can get the product at a reduced price.

A shopper shared her recent discovery on social media. She posted a video with the caption, ‘Share this with the world #Coles’

‘When you go to Coles, and you find an item on sale, and it’s sold out, you just ask for a raincheck', the shopper mentioned in the video.

'Now, when it’s back in stock, you get it for that price! My mind is blown!' she exclaimed.

The shopper said that the reason she found out about this trick was because her siblings used to work at the store.

Social media users affirmed that this works, and that this has actually been around for a long time.

‘Rain checks have been around since the late 1980’s!’ one comment stated.

‘Good to know because they stopped it during COVID-19, along with Woolies. But now only Coles has brought it back,’ another shopper said.

An employee at the retailer also confirmed: ‘Coles employee here. Can confirm this is a real thing.’

The highest-liked comment in the video also shared a nugget of wisdom for Coles shoppers: 'Same with the Coles roast cooked chickens, if there's none in the oven, they give you a card and get your next chicken free.'

Coles told a news source that the raincheck policy has existed for years and that customers can still take advantage of the offer.

'If a product is advertised in our weekly catalogue, but it is unavailable, customers are entitled to ask for a raincheck coupon. The raincheck enables customers to buy the item at the same advertised reduced price within 30 days of receiving the raincheck,' a spokesperson said.

'Raincheck vouchers cannot be redeemed on tobacco and smoking products, gift cards (including third party), mobile phones, mobile phone accessories and pre-paid mobile phone services. In instances where the item is marked “while stocks last” or “no rainchecks” we do not offer a raincheck,' they added.

For online shoppers, no need to worry—if an item is out of stock, it will be substituted or refunded.

A woman who works in Liquorland—a part of Coles—added that they also offer the raincheck service.

Meanwhile, Woolworths used to do rainchecks but stopped during the COVID-19 pandemic due to supply chain issues and has not resumed the offer.

Coles needs to address the ‘offers’ where you build up points for freebies. Their last one took me right to the last week so save enough points for a roasting tin- on the Wednesday there were plenty around (but I was 2 points short) but by the Saturday none at ANY Coles from Mornington to Southland! No items at all so I just boycott them now where at all possible.

There has been a raincheck in most big shops that I can remember for years

Last year I bought all of my 50+ bags of mixed fruit for my Christmas puddings either on special or by rain check still on special. Saved me heaps of money. Already checking for them to go on special this year so I can do the same, hopefully. Have started buying packets of cherries as they were hard to get closer to Christmas last year, and have started freezing eggs while they are available so I have enough for my 100 odd puddings I cook.

Rain checks were bought in to stop stores advertising lower prices but having limited stock on hand, which was a common practice. they would always have a dearer product on hand to offer the customer. this is a legal requirement. Woolworths is actually breaking the law. there has never been any notification that this law has been rescinded.

But not on tobacco products. Has anyone ever seen cut price cigarettes? I suppose you'd have to go to a certain type of tobacconist for that. :ROFLMAO:

This has been available in Coles for many years. I have used it on severeal occasions when I have wanted to stock up with a specific item. You only have to ask.

Woolies has not reintroduced them.
Woolworths shoppers reading this, it may be appropriate to ALWAYS stop at the customer service counter WHEN the sought after item is out of stock.

If enough customers seek it Woolworths may get the hint and reinstate the service.

Be the change you seek.

Yes, I'm surprised this customer called it a trick.

It's a service offered because the customer has left their home, travelled to the store and been disappointed to find the shelf empty.

Woolworths should absolutely reinstate this service.

Totally agree that woollies should reintroduce rain checks. NOT FAIR woollies.

I've read that Woolworths' reason for stopping the issue of rainchecks was that consumers were going to multiple stores to get them and then reselling those goods during the period of Covid restrictions.

That period ended in late 2022.

Woolworths customers, next time you're in Woolworths' stores and you find that the item you're seeking to buy is out of stock, take the time to ask for a rain check.

If met with the standard reply that is on Woolworths' site (see attached), ask for a supervisor and tell him/her that:

1. Woolworths owes it to genuine customers to reinstate rainchecks since the discontinuation was intended to stop people buying up and reselling during Covid; and

2. Covid restrictions/lockdowns are no longer being imposed.
