Ditch the overweight luggage fees with this controversial method

Travel can be a thrilling adventure—a chance to explore new cultures, taste exotic delicacies, and create stories we will tell for years.

However, along with the pleasures of our globetrotting tendencies, some pesky hurdles often need navigation.

One such challenge we have all dreaded is the exorbitant overweight luggage fee!

Imagine flying from Europe to Australia and being informed at the check-in counter that your luggage is over the weight limit by 17 kilos. The steep overweight luggage fee for such a situation? A whopping $1,598!

This isn't a scene from a travel-themed comedy but an episode from the life of globetrotter Emily Krogsboel and her boyfriend.

With defiance, they refused to cough up the absurd amount, embarking on an amusing journey to lighten their suitcase load.

Their simple solution was filmed and shared on social media, swiftly charming over 1.2 million viewers.

Emily narrated their tactic: 'They said we had to pay $1,598 for overweight luggage. So we decided to take on all the clothes needed.'

Off they went to the bathrooms. Layering multiple T-shirts, pants, jumpers, jackets, and probably their co-passengers' patience.

When they returned to the check-in counter, they looked slightly puffier but also notably lighter, at least in the context of baggage!

According to this specific airline’s policy, passengers face an extra $90 charge per kilo over the limit purchased in bundles of 5 kg.

However, these travellers sidestepped this exorbitant fee—all thanks to a fresh perspective on ‘travel clothing’.

Nevertheless, their scheme did not go unnoticed.

Emily mentioned, 'The airport security were not very happy when they saw us the second time.'

Just picture how security checks functioned with these human thermos flasks; they must have had quite a time clearing it!

Emily’s story sparked a flurry of reactions. Some viewers were in utter disbelief at the airline's substantial luggage fee.

Comments like 'How much extra?! That doesn’t seem right.' echoed.

Others cheered the couple’s strategic efforts, 'The heatstroke was definitely worth the $1,598!'

Key Takeaways
  • A couple devised a method to avoid an 'overweight' baggage fee of $1598 when their luggage was 17 kg over the weight limit while flying from Europe to Australia.
  • The pair wore multiple layers of clothing to lighten their suitcases.
  • The amusing strategy earned them passage without paying the fee, even though it did not sit well with airport security.
  • The incident was shared in a video viewed more than 1.2 million times, with many praising the couple’s 'smart' efforts.

But it’s worth noting that you should also carefully consider the comfort and health aspects, especially on long-haul flights or while travelling to warmer climates.

It’s innovative, but spending a few hours sweating it out in multiple layers might not be everyone's idea of comfortable travel.

Despite our best intentions, travelling light is not always achievable—we've all been guilty of wanting to fit just 'one more' souvenir into our already bursting suitcases.

However, to make your travelling experience easier, consider these tips:

  • Wear your heaviest clothes during the flight
  • Pack mini-sized toiletries
  • Utilise space-saving packing cubes
  • Roll clothes instead of folding
Here’s to your next jet-setting adventure. Pack smart, travel light, and remember—a good chuckle can also lighten the load! Safe travels and happy explorations!

Roll your clothes instead of folding makes them lighter? The exorbitant fee for weight is ludicrous, given the person sitting next to you could weigh 20kg more.

Stupid! That is so irresponsible of them. Aircraft aren’t meant to fly with unlimited weight. They have ‘check and balance’ rules and regulations to ensure the plane has enough fuel (that weighs a lot), baggage allowance (that also weighs a lot), and people (they weigh also). If baggage and passengers were not weighed how can the pilot and his staff ensure they have enough fuel to take off AND reach their destination.

How stupid can some people be - pack excess and you have to wear the consequences NOT the extra weight. I am very particular even about my carry-on baggage as I would like to reach my destination.

The fees for overweight luggage used to be 1% of the First Class fare on the flight per kilo over the allowance. These people were 17 kilos over that allowance for goodness sake. So they were paying close to $100 per kilo.
That 17 kilos would be the amount I would be packing for a month i.e. not even reaching the standard allowance! And this ' trick' is not the first time it has been played. It has been common practice for the selfish for decades. And every one of them claps themselves on the back for getting away with it. Just wait until there is a plane crash and they die because they cannot move quickly enough or get dragged underwater by the weight of all that excess baggage they so cleverly snuck on board.

Or the person next door could weigh 20kg LESS.

I don’t think rolling makes the clothes lighter, it just takes the air out of your baggage and gives you more room by rolling. You haven’t lightened your clothes unless you’ve cut off a sleeve or two or one trouser leg. Air also weighs something, don’t forget that.

gutless arseholes, Their is a limit to how much weight and aircraft can carry without adding extra fuel and that is why they charge for the extra weight, this stuff is expensive so what happens when the aircraft runs out of fuel because these heartless morons wanted to take so much luggage.... why do you think that the industry is looking to put passengers on the scale as well as their luggage

Catherines, How dumb can you be?? There is still 17kg on the plane whether it is on your person or in the luggage hold. As for added weight, it always amuses me that they weigh your luggage and then allow you to go to duty free and collect 2 bottles of grog weighing at least 3 kg. How consistent is that ??? It's all about money.

I think you might need to re-read what I said and what the person I was replying to had said. I replied to Squizzy 1 who said you could roll your clothes to make them lighter and I said rolling only makes room for more clothes and DOES NOT CHANGE THE WEIGHT OF YOUR CLOTHES unless one cuts off a trouser leg or a couple of sleeves. And I didn’t mention 17kg anywhere in my initial comment either. My reference to ‘wearing the consequences’ was about having to pay the overweight monetary charge - not about physically wearing the clothes. So I’m not the dumb one here, thank you very much.
