Disgruntled shopper exposes Bunnings for not honouring Price Beat Guarantee

Bunnings has earned a reputation as every Aussie's go-to destination for DIY and supplies for any project. But lately, there's been a bit of a buzz around their Price Beat Guarantee.

We've all heard the ads; it’s even written on the retailer's website–if you find the same in-stock item for a lower cost at a competitor (including GST and delivery charges), then Bunnings will beat it by 10 per cent.

But does the Price Beat guarantee actually hold up?

A customer recently took to Facebook to express her less-than-pleasant experience. According to her post, she was in the middle of price matching online. However, instead of waiting for an invoice to be sent, she decided to visit the store to speed up her purchase.

The woman shared that she was purchasing dog food that Bunnings had priced at $84. Surprisingly, she discovered the same item available for $64 at a nearby pet store in Wollongong—and it met all the criteria for the Price Beat guarantee!

Eager to take advantage of the lower price, she walked into the store to buy the item. To her dismay, a Bunnings staff member flat-out rejected her request to honour the Price Beat guarantee.

'I didn't even get a chance to finish my sentence before she cut me off, saying no,' the customer vented on Facebook. 'The worker flat-out refused...'

Unhappy with the response, the customer opted to purchase the dog food online and was thrilled to finally get the lower price.

The customer's experience sparked a heated discussion on the original post. Several Bunnings customers also shared their own dissatisfaction with the in-store price policy.

'Bunnings would not beat a price I showed them for a Karcher product,' shared one shopper, 'so their Price Beat Guarantee is non-existent!'

In another incident last month, a customer spotted a $38 price difference between two products in two different Bunnings stores. After searching online, he found a waterproofing agent priced at $179 at the Smithfield Warehouse and $216.37 at the McGraths Hill Branch.

Unfortunately, his local Bunnings wouldn't beat the lower cost, but he was surprised to learn that the Price Beat Guarantee was honoured at another nearby store.

So what's the truth behind the Price Beat policy?

According to Jen Tucker, the Director of Merchandise at Bunnings, their price match policy applies both in-store and online. The policy can be applied to items on sale (except for competitors' trade quotes, commercial quantities, and items sold by other Bunnings Group businesses and Bunnings Marketplace).

In their commitment to serving shoppers better, Tucker mentioned that team members undergo continuous training to ensure the best experience when customers request to apply the policy.

So you can be confident that they're prepared to make your shopping experience a breeze!

'We encourage our team members, when approached by customers who've experienced variations in the pricing of this nature, to apply common sense to the specific circumstances and to try to err in favour of the customer,' Ms Tucker added.

Key Takeaways

  • Her post on Facebook prompted other customers to share similar experiences and express confusion over the specifics of Bunnings' price-beating policy.
  • According to Bunnings' Director of Merchandise, Jen Tucker, the company's lowest prices policy includes both online and in-store purchases, and the company is working to improve in-store communication and training to deliver the best customer experience.

I think the 10% price guarantee doesn't include clearance items. I'm thinking with the huge price difference with the dog food may have been a clearance.
I do however believe some staff members are just too lazy to apply the discount or actually don't know how to do it

They could always find out how to do it. Don't advertise what you won't deliver!

If the team member won't do the discount ask to see the store manager and let them decide if you get the discount and if it applies the manager can discuss it with their team member simple

It's always been a bit of a con-trick --- remember when it was 10% of the difference ..
For me ; Bunnings has lost it's gloss now they have, and we have (yes me too) forced the closure of so many other locally based hardware stores . Ever tried to buy cans of spray paint at Bunning when it's locked up (by law) and there is no one there with the knowledge to release the can of paint you need ?
It's not too bad if you visit often to know the store lay out and where stock is kept . But for the casual shopper it's bloody nightmare of no staff that I now avoid as much as possible

Anther corporation aiming to become a monopoly. I buy paint elesewhere and if it is more expensive by a few dollars, that's fine. I also get better service and advice from the other place's staff who know what they are talking about. Most of the stuff sold by Bunnings is made in PR China and the quality is not what I once used to expect. Problem is does Australia make anything these days?

They don’t honour their pricing, I wanted a maze mulching bin, it was cheaper on line directly from Maze online. I was told to do the price match I had to physically be able to walk into the Maze store. Online didn’t count. So naturally bunnings lost the sale. Now I check prices on everything. Bunnings isn’t always the cheapest. The price matching is false advertising.

When I was looking for a telly I discovered Good Guys Online were cheaper than the Store, but some stores will price match but then refuse free delivery.

I don’t bother with requesting price matching or beating a better price I just buy from the business with the best price, it’s a simple way to get the cheapest deal

Bunnings have recently introduced a new Pet Products Line of products, but the majority are a LOT cheaper elsewhere at PetCircle, PetStock, and the local Supermarket. I have yet to test them on their Price Match policy, but will keep you all in the Loop when I do as nobody can afford to pay top-dollar these days for goods you can purchase cheaper elsewhere.

Absolutely- who walks away when some undertrained assistant says No? They have their price match/ beat guarantee up in the store!! So speak to someone above their pay grade and get what you want!
Don’t complain on social media- who cares!

Did you miss the bit where it says:
The policy can be applied to items on sale (except for competitors' trade quotes, commercial quantities, and items sold by other Bunnings Group businesses and Bunnings Marketplace)? That would mean an item at another Bunnings store would NOT be subjected to the 10% discount.

Flight Centre also used to advertise they would ALWAYS beat a competitor's price. So a few years ago I was booking a series of flights to Cuba. I did the research online, found the route I wanted to take and printed out the itinerary together with the prices, and went off to Flight Centre. Did they beat the price? Well yes, - by one dollar!
It wasn't worth the effort!

I have always received excellent service from Bunnings, no trouble returning things when I have over bought tiles, etc Even gave me a refund without a receipt
Must admit I've never tried to do a price match, but a lot of businesses do a better price on line, but they never do a price match on their own online prices.
