Discover Woolworths’ 'heartwarming' gesture towards shoppers during a heatwave

As the temperature continues to rise across Australia, Woolworths has stepped up to the plate with a heartwarming initiative.

To help its customers stay cool and hydrated, the supermarket giant handed out free bottles of water to shoppers—a simple yet effective act of kindness that has been met with widespread praise.

The initiative was first seen at the Greenfields store in Mandurah, Western Australia, where shoppers were greeted with signs taped onto shopping trolleys.

'If you're feeling hot and thirsty, please take a free bottle of water. On behalf of all the team here at Greenfields, we thank you for shopping with us,' the sign read.

This thoughtful gesture comes as Western Australia grapples with a relentless heatwave, with temperatures consistently hitting the mid-30s.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued repeated heatwave warnings for the region, urging residents to stay cool and hydrated to avoid heat-related illnesses.

This proactive measure by Woolworths was done to ensure the well-being of their customers during these extreme weather conditions.

After a photo of the sign was shared online, shoppers reported that other local Woolies stores had followed suit, sparking a wave of appreciation online.

'Great gesture for the community,' one person commented.

In response to the positive feedback, Woolworths said that it strives to bring a 'little good' to customers every day and 'this is just one example of the acts of kindness our team members perform'.

It is understood that such gestures are at the discretion of each store.

'It was particularly hot over the weekend. We hope our Mandurah customers enjoyed the gesture,' a Woolworths spokesperson said.

The recent heatwave has seen parts of Perth climb above 45°C.

While Geraldton—a coastal city in the midwest of the state—reached maximum temperatures of over 46°C on consecutive days.

Doctors encouraged Aussies to seek shade, drink plenty of water, and remain alert to the signs of heat-related illnesses—such as heatstroke and dehydration—which can be fatal.

This isn't the first time Woolworths has shown such consideration for its customers.

Late last year, a shopper in Adelaide praised the supermarket after her local store provided water bottles in buckets of ice for customers to help themselves.

A message printed on the papers attached to the free water said: 'Dear customers, we are in for a warm day. Stay safe and hydrated. Please enjoy a bottle of cold water from the store team.’
