When it comes to hanging clothes, the experts said it’s important to leave at least an inch between items on the line. This will help air to circulate and clothes to dry quickly and evenly.

‘If you're not careful, clothes can become crisp and dry and lose their fluffiness. There's an art to drying in the open air,’ they said.

It’s also important to move slow-drying items to spots where they’ll dry faster and to shake out clothes and towels as you hang them to loosen up the fibres that can get compacted during the wash.

Experts also mentioned the importance of hanging clothes on the line and avoiding folding things over.

According to Laundryheap CEO Deyan Dimitrov, ‘Hanging your clothes at full length will ensure that air can easily travel through the material, resulting in them drying faster.’

Bed sheets, too, can be dried quickly on the washing line.

Experts from appliance-maker Westinghouse also explained that you can decrease the drying time by hanging them by the ends.

‘To avoid a long drying time, fold your sheet in half, then pin each corner of the open end to the clothesline. By hanging your sheets in reverse, you'll decrease drying time by capturing more wind between the gaps of your sheets,’ they said.

The experts also suggested another unusual laundry trick: adding white vinegar to the fabric softener compartment of your washing machine before you turn it on. This may help soften clothes further.

I hang everything on coat hangers I never use the line because of spiders and bugs and my line is at side of house with no 🌞

I use white vinegar as a softener and I hang sheets upside down, but on two lines... 2 corners on one line & 2 on the line next to it. This forms a hammock so they dry faster. Also, if I have enough room, I only hang on every second line... this gives the clothes much more space for drying.

I use white vinegar as a softener and I hang sheets upside down, but on two lines... 2 corners on one line & 2 on the line next to it. This forms a hammock so they dry faster. Also, if I have enough room, I only hang on every second line... this gives the clothes much more space for drying.
We also hang our sheets this way. Sheets, towels and other general clothes are washed on different days to give the sheets enough room & air circulation.

Another way to keep clothes soft is to remove from the line as soon as dry, especially on hot days. The longer they are left in the sun the harder, and more faded, they become.
