Making the most of what you have can be such a daunting task—everything’s so expensive—but there’s no need to worry,because with a savvy shopping list and a few creative meal ideas, you can make your money go further in the supermarket.

That’s exactly what Aussie mum and former Masterchef star Steph Da Sousa has done, transforming her weekly ALDI shop into five delicious meals for just $5 a serve!


Steph managed to buy all the necessary ingredients for a little under $100, and she shared her list on social media.

On the shopping list, you’ll find all sorts of treats, from beef mince, canned corn and puff pastry to shredded cheese, fresh fruits and vegetables and much more!

But the real magic is what Steph has been creating with these ALDI ingredients.

She wrote on her social media: ‘On our yummy menu: Curry Beef Pasties, Roast Chicken and Potato Bake, Shepherd’s Pie, Pork Steak and White Bean Ragu, and a tempting Sausage Pasta Bake. Can’t wait to embark on this foodie adventure with you all!’


Don’t worry, members, we have three of Steph’s recipes for you to try at home!

Pork Steak and White Bean Ragu

This one-pot wonder is ‘easy and quick to make’ according to Steph. Here’s how she did it:

Ingredients:
  • 500g Pork loin steak
  • 2 400g cans white beans
  • 1 400g can diced tomatoes
  • 1 diced carrot
  • 2 diced celery stalks
  • 1 diced onion
  • 1 tbsp crushed garlic
  • 2 stock cubes
  • Zest and juice of a lemon
  • 1 bunch basil roughly chopped

Instructions:
  1. Season the pork steak with salt, pepper, and olive oil.
  2. Pan fry for 2 mins on each side until golden.
  3. Set aside to rest.
  4. In the same pan, sauté the vegetables with extra olive oil, salt, and pepper for 5 minutes.
  5. Add the following: garlic, stock cubes, tomatoes, white beans and 1/2 cup water. Let it simmer for 15 mins.
  6. Cut the pork into smaller pieces, mix it into your pan, and heat through.
  7. Finish by adding lemon zest, juice, and chopped basil leaves.

Curry Beef Pasties

This recipe is perfect for those who like to prep their meals. Steph shared that this can be frozen pre-baked or post-bake. The mixture can also be frozen and put in the pastry later.

Here’s how you can do it:

Ingredients:
  • 1 packet of puff pastry
  • 500g Beef mince
  • 2 diced potatoes
  • 1 diced carrot
  • 1 diced celery stick
  • 1 diced onion
  • 1 can corn, drained
  • 1 tbsp crushed garlic
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp curry powder

Instructions:
  1. In a frying pan, cook your vegetables in oil for about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the beef and let it cook until it’s brown.
  3. Add in garlic, tomato paste, and curry powder and let it cook for another 5 minutes.
  4. Let it cool down in the fridge.
  5. Cut each pastry slice in half. Put 1/2 cup of beef mix on one side and fold it over. Seal the edges tightly.
  6. Put them on a baking tray with baking paper and bake them in the oven at 200 degrees Celsius for 20 to 30 minutes until golden brown.

Easy Shepherds Pie

Ah, pie. As far as Aussie classic meals go, this is one of the best! Ingredients:

Ingredients:
  • 500g beef mince
  • 2 diced carrots
  • 2 diced celery sticks
  • 1 diced onion
  • 1 diced head of broccoli
  • 1 Shepherd pie recipe base
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 packet of potato Jewels
  • 250g pizza cheese

Instructions:
  1. In a hot pan, cook the carrot, celery, and onion until soft.
  2. Add in the beef and cook it up until it’s browned.
  3. Add the broccoli, flavour sachet, and water join the party.
  4. Let it simmer until the sauce thickens.
  5. Lay that beef mix in an oven dish. Crown it with potato jewels.
  6. Bake it at a warm 220 degrees Celsius for 20 minutes.
  7. Sprinkle a generous helping of pizza cheese on top and let it melt and brown in the oven for another 10 minutes.
