In a shocking act, a Coles worker was brutally attacked by a man attempting to steal a box of coffee.

The incident, which took place at a Coles store in Mudgeeraba on the Gold Coast, was captured on CCTV.

On the evening of April 12, 2023, just after 5 pm, 20-year-old Evan Joel Roberts staggered into the loading dock of the Coles store.

Under the influence of alcohol, Roberts attempted to steal a box of Nescafe Coffee from the storage area.

A Coles worker, clad in a yellow hi-vis vest and dark clothing, was busy loading items in a corner of the dock when he spotted the thief.

Recognising his duty to protect the store's property, the worker rushed over to confront Roberts.

What followed was a horrifying attack.

Roberts, in his inebriated state, lashed out at the worker, throwing several punches and kneeing him in the torso.

The worker, who was caught off guard, found himself in a violent scuffle with the thief.

Roberts fled the scene without the coffee, only to return moments later as the worker was attempting to close the roller door at the dock.

The assailant launched another attack, punching the worker three more times.

In self-defence, the worker armed himself with a metal pole.

The worker sustained minor facial injuries from the assault and was taken to Robina Hospital for treatment.

Roberts was later apprehended and pleaded guilty to charges of assault, stealing, and failing to appear in Southport Magistrate Court.

During his court appearance, Roberts revealed that he had been drinking heavily to cope with mental health and relationship issues.

In a surprising twist, it was revealed that the Coles worker was a former schoolmate of Roberts.

The attacker expressed remorse for his actions, stating, 'I am really sorry about the whole offence.'

'When I found out who it was, it hurt me a bit more because I did have a connection with him throughout high school.'

Roberts, who is being treated for personality disorder and ADHD, was placed on probation for six months, with no conviction recorded.

Roll out the old chestnuts yet once again. Been through all three in my court appearances and NEVER brought any of these issues as a "defence". Just own the fact you have committed the crime without resorting to excuses.

Solicitors always come up with these excuses and judges fall for them. If this is a legitimate reason everyone would be a criminal. So you ask yourself why are there so many upstanding citizens with similar ailments who do not resort to violence and thieving

What a joke, mental illness or not, the penalty should fit the crime , in this case its a slap on the wrist, at least make him take an alcohol rehab course.

These offenders have all the ailments under the sun 🌞 mental health, ADHD,relationship breakdowns the list goes on the court system needs to get some ball's and deal with these people properly anyone can say this and get off without sentence the whole system is a BLOODY JOKE and the victim tossed aside as if nothing happened what about their rights and mental health after such incidents 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

He lost the plot, but he desperately wanted a coffee hit. At least he apologized.
No. The worker had to go to hospital. For doing his job.

Sorry doesn't cut it.

Violence against a perported stranger calls for appropriate consequences.

Six months probation and NO CONVICTION!

Here the attacker attacked, then went away and CAME BACK and attacked again.

ADHD my foot.

And as for drinking to excess, that's a choice.

He got a slap on the wrist that was no real punishment.

Convict and punish properly. Consequences.

Yes, that's correct the worker had to go to hospital, and was very lucky to only have minor facial injuries from that assault. The assailant was so 'out of it' he didn't even recognise he knew the Coles worker was a former schoolmate from their high school they attended. I agree that he got off lightly. I can't comment on what happened in court, but I've been called up for jury service a few times. I read he came clean with the police and he had no past convictions. If it happens again, I feel it will be a different outcome for him.

I feel the seriousness of the attacker's actions should have been weighed up against his conviction-less past.

What he did, even as a first offence merited punishment.

What happened though is that:

1. he got away with it; while

2. the worker got injured and traumatized.

Roberts, who is being treated for personality disorder and ADHD…
What sort of treatment is he receiving? Just a script for some medication?
A slap on the wrist solves nothing. Problem is, the mental health system cannot cope with the amount of people in need as it is.
Here....have this Ritalin and dexamphetamine....

To be brutally honest, I really believe the crux of the problem here is the lack of mental health facilities and trained professionals. Back pre 1980s, when you could still be sectioned and treated for 'out of control' anger issues, he would have been assessed by Psychiatric consultants and either treated or been exposed for using it as an excuse.
So sick of seeing obviously unwell people scavenging and begging on the streets because there are no treatment options available any more. 😔

Hand it over to a Uni Grad to do a thesis on it and you will get that the Coles employee should be charged for not assisting the theft and giving more grief to the perpetrator. Police won't intervene as it required a report to be written and a vehicle used to attend the site. Permission to use vehicle would not be given for a petty crime like this. Cole's/ Kmart, Woolies etc cost escalates as more and more thefts occur then you get the poor hard done by journos writing that the supermarkets are bumping up prices. can't have it all one-way people. either you pay for police or you pay for groceries etc.

The legal system really is a mess these days....so many people receive such light sentences for crimes these days, whether it be house breaking, stealing cars, assaults, destroying public property, robbery from shops or small business etc etc......and in return the poor victim gets nothing....often losing stolen articles forever and having to resort to their own insurance policies for replacement or a cash figure instead. The victims are left to make their own restitution of property, whilst the offender gets off with a slap on the wrist. Changes are needed, but we don't seem to have the right people to initiate them....bunch of weak bastards. 😱🤬😝

With experience in dealing with someone very close to me, those made him worse. But they do have a place if a correct assessment is made and the appropriate dosage. Getting the dose right is very hit and miss and can take awhile.
Ok…now where’s my diazepam! 😁

Many psychotropic medications require ultra fine tuning to get the right balance, especially with multiple medications, which is usually the case in people with a mental illness.
