Discover the Secret Washing Machine Setting Mums Swear By for Incredibly Soft Towels!

There's nothing quite like wrapping yourself in a soft, fluffy towel after a warm bath or shower. But too often, we're met with towels that are stiff and scratchy, leaving us longing for that luxurious hotel towel experience at home. If you've been battling with less-than-luxurious linens, fear not! The secret to achieving the softest towels may be simpler than you think, and it's all about mastering the right washing machine setting.

The Quest for the Perfectly Soft Towel

The journey to soft towel nirvana often begins with a plea for help, as was the case with one mum who reached out to the Facebook Group, Mums Who Clean, in search of bath sheets that maintain their softness wash after wash. While some members recommended their favorite brands, the conversation quickly turned to a more universal solution: the washing technique itself.

The Rinse Cycle Revelation

The collective wisdom of mums across the group pointed to one crucial step in the laundering process: the rinse cycle. It turns out that an extra rinse can make all the difference in the world. One mum shared her method, saying, 'I wash them with minimal detergent. I don’t use softener or vinegar and double rinse them. I have a top loader.' Another added, 'I wash towels as usual, but I do an extra rinse cycle.'

Front loader or top loader, the consensus was clear – an additional rinse cycle helps keep towels soft and fluffy. One mum detailed her routine: 'I have a front loader, always wash in warm water, use an extra rinse cycle, dry on the line, when 3/4 dry, finish in the dryer, always soft.'

Why Does an Extra Rinse Cycle Help?

The logic behind the extra rinse is straightforward. Towels can become stiff and scratchy due to the buildup of detergent and other residues. This can happen for a couple of reasons:

1. Overuse of detergent – More is not always better when it comes to laundry soap.
2. Inefficient rinse cycles – Some washing machines may not rinse as effectively as others.

By running an extra rinse cycle, you ensure that all the detergent and residue are thoroughly washed out of your towels, leaving them free to dry soft and fluffy.

The Detergent Dilemma

Another factor to consider is the type of detergent you're using. Some store-bought detergents contain fillers like cardboard and potato skins, which can lodge in the fibers of your towels, contributing to that unwanted crunchiness. It's worth doing a bit of research to find a detergent that's gentle on fabrics and free of unnecessary fillers.

Six Tips for Towel-Washing Triumph

To help you achieve the softest towels possible, here are six tips to guide you in selecting the right washing machine setting:

1. Experiment with a double or extra rinse setting. If you notice an improvement, try reducing the amount of detergent and sticking to a single rinse to save time, water, and detergent.
2. Familiarize yourself with your machine's settings. Some machines offer a bedding, bulky, or heavy cycle that's perfect for towels.
3. Regular or cotton settings are generally a safe bet for towel loads.
4. Opt for cold to warm cycles, as these are often most effective for cleaning towels without causing damage.
5. Select a high spin speed to extract as much water as possible, reducing drying time and helping to fluff up the fibers.
6. When using a dryer, choose a bulky, cotton, or regular setting, and be sure to check the towels once the cycle is complete to avoid over-drying.

By following these tips and paying attention to how you launder your towels, you can transform your bath linens from crunchy to cozy. Remember, the key to soft towels isn't just in the fabric—it's in the wash. So next time you're doing laundry, give these methods a try and bask in the comfort of your newly softened towels.

I did about a year ago and compared the Anko (Kmart) and the Big W equivalent. Kmart won hands down.

What pisses me off is the many product reviews don't even mention the product and how it performs. They are only concerned with the online purchase and delivery issues!
Choice has just recently 22/2/2024 I just read it.👍

Too much detergent used in any washing, not just towels will make the fabrics hard.
