Avocados are a creamy and delicious meal companion. But this fruit seems to be one that can spoil quickly, as many an avo-on-toast connoisseur can attest to.
But did you know that you can preserve ripe avocados and use them for months to come?
One food blogger shared her little-known method that stunned people online.
The food blogger shared on social media her method to freeze avocados to keep them ripe for months—with many confirming that it tastes 'just as good as fresh'.
‘I’ve started freezing avocado,’ she said.
‘I mash them up, and I use a small cookie scoop. Then freeze. They don’t turn brown at all, and when they set up firm in a few hours, I throw them in a Ziploc bag.’
Others squeezed a dash of lemon juice into their smashed avocado before placing it inside the freezer. But her technique didn’t need any additions.
‘No more nasty brown colour or throwing expired ones away,’ she said.
‘I freeze about two bags at a time. They thaw beautifully, too. Try it.’
Frozen avocados are good for four to six months.
The post garnered 10,000 'likes' and hundreds of comments, with many heaping praise on the ‘brilliant’ method.
‘Never considered this. Great idea,’ one commented.
‘This is genius! Thank you!’ another said.
Others also shared their method, with one adding: ‘I just peel, slice and put in [the] freezer like I do bananas. Smash when they come out for guacamole.’
My Nguyen, a food lover, also shared a different way of freezing avocados in her video online.
She usually places the whole avocado with skin on directly in the freezer.
‘I’m about to save you a lot of money on avocados,’ she said.
‘Save your avocados before they go bad by freezing them.’
‘This avocado is very ripe. Instead of letting it go bad, I’m going to put it in my freezer.’
She explained later how she defrosted her frozen avocado.
‘All you need to do is soak it in warm water,’ she said.
‘When freezing avocados, you do need to break down the cell walls, which makes the avocados softer and creamier.’
She peeled off the skin once the avocado had softened.
Users commented about the freezing technique. Meanwhile, others said that they couldn’t taste the difference after defrosting.
One user said, ‘It ain’t pretty but tastes the same.’
Another responded, ‘Never knew! Find myself throwing them away.’
‘I’m today years old! Will totally use this trick now,’ a third added.
