Discover the $6 luxury secret at Woolies that lives up to its $350 high-end competitors!

It can be hard to find a good value luxury item these days, with so many products costing an arm and a leg and offering little in return. But don't worry - we know great places to hunt for bargains, including at your local Woolworths store!

That's right - the supermarket might just be the last place you'd expect to find luxury items, but believe it or not, it seems to have a $6 secret that rivals high-end varieties costing upwards of $350!

This secret came to light when a Victorian couple found a 50g tub of black caviar at Woolies. Kelly and Habib Arvan, who share a TikTok account, were so pleased with their discovery that they made a video about it with almost 540,000 views.

'$6 caviar from Woolworths - say no more,' Kelly can be heard saying in their viral post.

For those of us who are a bit clueless when it comes to caviar (we were, too), caviar is a luxury food generally made from the roe (eggs) of sturgeon, a type of large fish. The taste of caviar can vary depending on the species of sturgeon, where it's harvested from, and how it's processed, but it generally has a rich and salty flavour with a smooth, buttery texture.

Kelly explains in the video that there's black caviar and red caviar, and that this one is lumpfish and has a 'more kind of an earthy kind of taste'. Lumpfish are more abundant in nature, making their eggs a cheaper alternative.

Good-quality caviar is often described as having a distinct taste that can be both salty and slightly sweet, with a subtle umami flavour.

The eggs are typically small, firm, and glossy, and they burst with flavour as you bite into them. The texture of caviar is often compared to that of tiny pearls, with a satisfying pop in the mouth.

Now, the cost of black caviar at other stores (such as Victorian caviar producer Yarra Valley Caviar) can range from $14 to as much as $350 (this price is for a 50g tub of Swedish lumpfish Black Caviar).

So can you believe it - you can get 50g of black caviar from Woolies at the bargain price of only $6!

Caviar is often enjoyed as a garnish or topping for various dishes, such as sushi, oysters, and blinis (small pancakes), or simply served on its own with crackers or toast points.

Its unique taste and luxurious reputation make it a delicacy that is prized by many food connoisseurs. However, taste preferences can vary, and some people may find caviar to be an acquired taste due to its strong flavour and unique texture.

At this point, the Arvans had already decided to mix the caviar with Doritos corn chips, based on another TikTok recommendation they saw, and the verdict when they tried it - was undoubtedly a thumbs up.

'Run, don't walk. RUN!' Kelly Arvan excitedly exclaimed. '10/10... Arvan family approved!' Habib, who must've been equally pleased with his wife's beautiful find, simply replied with 'So good!'

This reaction from customers was then echoed in the comments, with hundreds of people expressing their own excitement and planning to do the same.

Of course, a few caviar 'purists' came forward to comment on 'proper black caviar', but overall, the response to the video has been overwhelmingly positive.

Members, if you're wondering if this is worth the trip to Woolies to try, the answer is… Yes – definitely.

My taste buds are in for a treat! I remember my Mama having caviar on toast points and as a little girl I would sneak my fingers to her plate and slip those glossy little balls onto my finger tip then pop them on the roof of my mouth 😁 yummm. Of to Woolies I will go today. 😊🙃😊 Oh and some delicious smoked salmon to complete my taste sensation. Happy weekend one and all!

Mmm, not sure what the fuss is about. I have been buying this product from Coles & Woolie for decades. Literally decades. The red version has not been readily available for years. It’s a great poor man version. I love it with creamed goats cheese or sour cream. Impressive topper on seafood cocktails or canapés. But not a patch on the real caviar. But a fantastic affordable option.

Now, please explain to the non-cognoscenti out there exactly how caviar is "harvested" -- it may surprise them. Also, tell them to look up the method used to extract perfume fixative from civets.

Personally, I prefer the red. I dont care if they call it the poor mans version, to me it has always tasted and smelt better than the black.

I had been buying this for years at Lithgow Woolies & Coles then all of a sudden it disappeared from the shelf. Will have to check again to see if they have started to sell it again.

Just you wait everyone, because it's be placed on Facebook and sites like this Woolworths will be 'in the know' and $Price Increase up to $15.00.

But guess what. Woolworths appear to have gone 'one better' and completely deleted from their site. Nothing under caviar and nothing under the product name Lumpfish as well. So, I did a search under the internet and up came Holland House Lumpfish Caviar $6.00. So, it's there, but they may be trying to hide it.

Time will tell.

Consumers should be aware to check the labelling on any container expressed to hold "caviar". There isn't a trademark ( or copyright) on the generic name, and although "caviar" should refer to the eggs of Russian black Sturgeon eggs, it is often used by purveyors of foodstuffs of lesser quality, including "lumpfish". About five years ago American exporters began sending red and black eggs of catfish to Australia marketed as "caviar".

Caviar actually means the pickled eggs of any large fish, especially sturgeon. :) I just googled it!

try it with the Woolies Plain/Original Rice biscuits with any type of cheese you like, a thin slice of dill pickle or gerkin, or salmon, maybe with a tiny bit of Alfa. It's also nice with oysters. There are so many ways to have Holland House Lumpfish Caviar.
