The humble cup noodle, a staple in many Australian homes, has been given a sustainable makeover by Maggi, a brand owned by Nestlé.
This pantry favourite has been reimagined in a bid to reduce plastic usage, offering an 'exciting' new alternative that cuts down plastic packaging by a whopping 83 per cent.
The classic Instant Noodles Cups, retailing for $2.50 in Coles and Woolworths, has been a go-to for many looking for a quick and easy meal.
However, the new Maggi Mug Noodles are set to challenge this cult favourite.
Designed to fit perfectly into a standard at-home mug, these noodles allow consumers to enjoy their two-minute snack without the guilt of single-use plastic.
Monique Koning, Nestlé’s Head of Marketing - Foods, explained the motivation behind this change.
'We know many of our consumers enjoy eating instant noodles in a cup at home, so we have rethought the cup,' she said.
'Removing the plastic cup while keeping the taste is a bold step on the Maggi sustainability journey.'
The new Maggi Mug Noodles are available in four-packs, sold for $6 in Coles and Woolworths, in chicken and beef flavours.
The change was first spotted by an eagle-eyed shopper at Woolworths, who took to social media to share their discovery.
'Spotted at Woolies today. Does this mean they’re phasing out the cup noodles now?' they wrote.
The post sparked a debate online, with some questioning, ‘How is it different than the packet noodles?’
One user clarified, 'It’s a little round puck like the cups but in a packet instead. Just fit it in the bottom of your mug, and you add the water.'
This meant that while the new product was essentially the same, the change in shape and packaging made it a more sustainable choice.
However, some users noted that the cup noodles were convenient for travel and situations where mugs or bowls were not readily available.
Nestlé has not confirmed whether the original packaging will be phased out completely.
Some consumers said they had ‘always’ thought the noodle cups were ‘made from cardboard’, which is partially true.
The cups are indeed made from cardboard, but they are coated with a layer of plastic film, typically food-grade polythene (PE) material.
This PE layer is necessary to prevent hot liquids from leaking during use, but it renders the cups non-recyclable.
Now that this new product is hitting the shelves, here’s the burning question: How are you eating your two-minute noodles?
When it comes to making these instant noodles, how you eat them is just as important as how you make them.
In a previous story, a woman shared her way of cooking two-minute noodles, to which several people reacted. You can read more about it here.
