Discover How Triathlete Peter O'Neill Achieved Legend Status in His 40th Noosa Triathlon

As we all know, 2020 was a year that presented many challenges – we certainly felt the punches it threw at us! If anything, it has taught us that we should cherish every moment.

For Peter O'Neill, it was a reminder of exactly what inspired him to take part in the Noosa Triathlon every single year: life is short, so make sure you live it! The 72-year-old was determined to take part in the event's 40th anniversary race despite battling various conditions such as shingles, sciatica and a hernia operation.

'I haven't had a great six months, but I'll get around,' said the Noosa resident, who was a part of the group that came up with the idea back in the ‘80s! 'A few of us got together and discussed it around a motel pool table and got it going in October 1983,' Peter added with a smile.

He was the only one in the group of 7 who could swim, so he 'drew the short straw' and gave it a go anyway.

It was worth it: the event saw 220 athletes part in its inaugural year, including 79 individuals and 48 teams – and today, more than 13,000 people take part in the 5-day festival’s 11 events.

It goes without saying that Peter was humbled by the recognition he has received for taking part in each and every one of the races. 'I've met so many friends,' said Peter, content after enjoying not only the physical benefits but the social side of the event, 'friends that I ride with and friends I swim with – it's been fabulous.'

Peter plans to keep participating until the body tells him to stop. Did you know that the Noosa Triathlon is an Olympic-distance event? It includes a 1.5km swim, a 40km bike ride and a 10km run.
