Designing your home within a budget can be challenging.
With rising costs in Australia, many try to avoid expensive renovations and permanent changes, which often leave spaces feeling impersonal.
However, one clever social media user has come up with an inexpensive solution for adding personality to your space—a DIY pendant lamp using materials from Kmart and Bunnings for less than $15!
Interior decorator and DIY enthusiast Tiff shared her simple technique for creating a chic hanging bedside lamp.
Using just a White Linear Pot (Small), Medium-sized Kitchen Hooks, Starter Cord, Cotton Cord, and a Remote Control Battery Operated Puck Light, she made a lamp that looks far more expensive than its bargain price tag.
'If you’ve been following me for a while you would have seen I’ve made plenty of different versions of … pendant lights,' she said.
'I normally go with large basket-type shades, but thought I would try a cheap and small alternative this time round.'
'I love the way it turned out, and for a total cost of $13.15, I’m definitely not complaining.'
Other home decor enthusiasts filled her comments section with praise for having found a cheap lighting option.
'It’s renter-friendly and super affordable! Thank you for the amazing idea!' One replied.
While another added: 'I need to do this in my bedroom! Awesome hack. I actually have these pots in my house!'
One user asked: 'I wanna know if it’s fallen during the middle of the night?'
To which Tiff responded: 'No, I never have any issues with command strips. Been using them for years to hang everything in our rentals.'
Here’s how you can replicate Tiff’s DIY bedside lamp:
Step 1: Choose your materials
The most important part of this project is selecting a lightweight pot or vessel. While this project uses specific products from Kmart and Bunnings, you can actually use any small pot, bowl, mason jar, or basket—as long as it has a hole in the bottom.
Make sure that whatever you choose is lightweight so the cord can support it. Metal, ceramic, or overly large vessels won't work.
Step 2: Prepare the pot
Measure out your starter cord so that it reaches from the ceiling to the desired lamp height. Insert the starter cord through the hole in the bottom of the pot. Tie a double knot at the base of the pot to secure it to the cord.
Step 3: Install the light
Unscrew the top of the pendant light kit and insert batteries. Tie a piece of cotton cord through the exterior lighting kit hole and knot it. Screw the top back on. Now you have a loop to attach your light!
Step 4: Connect the components
Tie the cotton cord attached to the pendant light onto the knot at the base of the pot. This allows the light to sit neatly inside.
Step 5: Hang on the ceiling
Secure a kitchen hook to the ceiling above where you want the lamp hung. Create a loop at the end of the starter cord and hang it from the hook.
Now, switch on your light and enjoy!
