Prince William and Kate are preparing for a major change that will reshape their family life.

The royal couple is leaving behind their current home in Windsor for a grander residence.

But the move has already sent ripples through the local community.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are set to move their family from Adelaide Cottage to Forest Lodge in Windsor Great Park by the end of the year.

Reports suggest the move has forced two families living in neighbouring cottages to leave their homes.

Forest Lodge, formerly known as Holly Grove, was first built in the 1770s and expanded in the early 1900s, and the cottages nearby were once part of the estate’s stables.

'They were told to move out. I guess they were given somewhere else, but they were told they had to move, and added, "They were not expecting it".'

The source added: 'Those houses are very close to the lodge, so they're not going to want any Tom, Dick or Harry living in those houses if there are going to be royals there.'

No eviction notices were served, and it is understood that the families were offered similar or improved housing elsewhere within the 4800-acre Windsor Great Park.

The move is seen as a fresh start for the couple, particularly after Princess Kate’s battle with cancer.

A royal shared: 'Moving gives them an opportunity for a fresh start and a new chapter. It's an opportunity to leave some of the more unhappy memories behind.'

Understanding the Crown Estate

The Crown Estate isn’t the personal property of the Royal Family; it belongs to the British monarch as a public figure, with profits going to the Treasury.[10]

The estate manages 7,920 square kilometres of agricultural land and forest, more than half of the UK’s foreshore, and other holdings including Ascot Racecourse and Windsor Great Park.[11]

The family relocated from Kensington Palace to Windsor in August 2022, just weeks before the death of Queen Elizabeth II, seeking more privacy and a calmer environment for their children, George, Charlotte and Louis.

The children were enrolled in the local Lambrook School, where they remain.

Reports suggest the family had outgrown their four-bedroom Adelaide Cottage and considered several larger properties, including Fort Belvedere, the former home of King Edward VIII.

Forest Lodge was ultimately chosen for its Georgian architecture and spacious grounds.

Did you know?

Did you know? Forest Lodge is valued at approximately £16 million on the open market,[20][21][22] making it worth more than 20 times the median house price in Sydney.

The heritage-listed mansion features eight bedrooms, six bathrooms, a long gallery, a principal drawing room and a central hall, alongside a tennis court and pond.

It underwent a restoration project in 2001 and is now seen as the couple’s potential 'forever home'.

The couple will fund the move themselves and will pay market rent to the Crown Estate, which owns the property.

Royal sources confirmed they plan to remain at Forest Lodge even after ascending to the throne.

What This Means For You

Two families were asked to vacate their cottages near Forest Lodge ahead of the royal move, though no eviction notices were served and alternative housing was offered within Windsor Great Park.

Forest Lodge itself is a Georgian mansion with eight bedrooms, six bathrooms, and expansive grounds, reflecting the scale of change the royal family is experiencing.

This move represents a fresh start for Prince William and Princess Kate following the challenges of Princess Kate’s health, highlighting how life transitions—even for those in the public eye—can bring both disruption and new opportunities.

This serves as a reminder that major life changes often affect not just those making the move, but the wider community around them, and adapting to unexpected shifts is a shared human experience.

Have you ever witnessed a neighbourhood change that left long-term residents unexpectedly displaced?
