Deep clean your vacuum cleaner with this paper towel trick!

If your place is anything like ours, keeping your home clean and dust-free is a pretty regular job for your vacuum cleaner, and we bet if you were asked when you last ran it around the house or apartment you could probably give us a pretty accurate answer.

But when was the last time you cleaned your vac? We don’t just mean emptied it out, but actually, thoroughly cleaned it?

Washing machines, dishwashers, vacuums - it’s easy to overlook the fact that the very tools we use to keep our place clean require maintenance of their own.

Not only can the longevity of your cleaning tools be significantly increased by keeping them in good condition, but they’ll do a much more thorough cleaning job overall too.

Today a cleaning expert is here to remind us that it's important to take care of our beloved vacuum cleaners and give them the attention they deserve.

A housekeeper by trade, Vanesa Amaro refers to herself on TikTok as the "Queen of Cleaning."

In one of her most recent videos, she gave a demonstration on how to clean a filthy and dusty vacuum to help make sure that it would continue working at peak efficiency for as long as possible.

"Come on, now is the time to act like a responsible adult. Vacuums aren't cheap, so changing them every six months isn't a good idea," she said in the clip, which has now gone viral on the platform with over 314,000 views.

In the video, she provided an explanation and demonstration of how she maintains the cleanliness of her vacuum.

The first thing that she does is clear out the vacuum head of any debris or hair that may be clogged in there (especially important if you have pets!).

Next, she instructs her audience to "wash the parts that you can wash," and she recommends that they consult the instruction manual that came with their vacuum for a list of the parts that can safely be soaked in water.

But vacuum cleaners have a lot of parts and places where dirt and dust can get stuck. So, if there's a part you can't reach, Vanesa advises you to "use your imagination."

Vanesa gets a paper towel and then uses a butter knife to push the paper towel into the brush roll – this allows her to clean the interior of the rollers.

Then, she uses her hand to turn the roll, which allows the paper towel to complete one full rotation while simultaneously accumulating dirt along the way.

Finally, it's time to clean your vacuum filters, which, according to Vanesa, can make your vacuum smell like stale corn chips whenever you use them if they aren't washed regularly.

When she was done cleaning the vacuum, Vanesa turned the vacuum head over to show how clean it turned out. "How pretty?!" she said.

The viewers of Vanesa's video, which has since gone viral, expressed their appreciation for the cleaning tips and that they were eager to clean their own vacuums as well after watching her do it.

In the comments section, one fan even wrote, "Who else is cleaning their vacuum this evening because the queen has spoken?" prompting a wave of reactions.

Others complimented her on the ingenious way she cleaned her vac with paper towels, and some of them admitted that they had never considered doing that before.

"OMG that paper towel trick! Never thought about that," one woman wrote, with another adding, "So I can wash the filter like that? I had no idea. Thank you so much. It's no surprise that my vacuum doesn't work as well as it should."

Meanwhile, another follower, who seemed to be speaking from experience, shared another helpful tip: "Make sure your filters are COMPLETELY dry before vacuuming or the dirt turns to mud!" (We can only guess how the person realised their error.…)

Take this as a sign, everyone: it's time to clean out your vacuums!
