Debit Card Vs Savings account

Just wondering how many others are aware. Today I used my debit card which is directly linked to my savings account.
I was told that there would be a surcharge if l used my debit card but no surcharge if l clicked on savings, to make the payment.
This is one in the same and l am paying with my own money.
So why is there a surcharge, l asked.
Was told that the banks are charging because it is a debit card and if you use it as such, you will be charged.
But if you used it as a savings account card or a cheque account card, there was no surcharge.
Go figure.
