Telecommunications costs are on the rise again, leaving many Australians wondering how their monthly bills will be impacted.
The latest announcement from one of the country’s largest telcos has stirred up concerns, with changes set to affect a range of mobile plans.
What does this mean for consumers, and why is the company making these adjustments?
Optus, Australia's second-largest telecommunications company, had informed its customers about an upcoming price increase for select mobile plans.
The price hikes, which ranged from $2 to $6 per month, were set to take effect from 4 June 2025.
Some of the affected plans included popular ones like Choice, Choice Plus, and Business Mobile Plus.
Anthony Shiner, Optus’ managing director of customer solutions, explained in an interview with that the increases were necessary to support ongoing investments in the company's network.
Shiner added that these funds would help improve network speed, coverage, and reliability, as well as enhance technology.
‘Any device payments customers are currently paying will remain the same,’ he assured.
Optus also announced that impacted customers would receive clear notifications about the changes via email or SMS.
The telco further revealed that customers affected by the price changes would see increased data inclusions, ranging from 20GB to 40GB per month, depending on the specific plan.
‘Data inclusions will also be increasing so customers can continue browsing, streaming and enjoying their favourite activities on their mobile devices,’ Shiner said.
In light of these adjustments, the telco’s cheapest postpaid plan, the Optus Choice Plus plan, was expected to rise from $52 to $55 per month.
However, Optus’ new rates would still be cheaper than Telstra’s, which started at $65 per month for 50GB of data.
Vodafone’s plans, starting at $39 per month for the first 12 months and increasing to $49 per month thereafter, offered 100GB, or normally 50GB of data.
This price increase followed a similar move in August 2024, when Optus raised postpaid plan prices by $3 to $6 per service.
The telco attributed the previous price increase to ‘increasing costs’ necessary to maintain and provide its network.
In a previous story, we explored how rising costs are impacting other areas of Aussie finances.
