Australia mourns the loss of Dallas Hayden, the beloved wife of former Governor-General and Labor Party Leader Bill Hayden, who passed away peacefully at her Queensland home at the age of 87.
Her death comes as a double blow to the family, occurring just months after the death of her husband, a stalwart of Australian politics.
Dallas Hayden was more than just the wife of a political figure; she was a woman of remarkable warmth, optimism, and quiet courage.
Her strength of character was a beacon of inspiration for her husband, Bill, who often acknowledged that his achievements in public service were made possible by her unwavering support.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to Mrs Hayden, stating, 'She spent many years playing supporting roles in public life and her optimism, her quiet courage and her strength of character were a powerful source of inspiration for her adoring husband, Bill.'
'On behalf of the Australian government and the Australian Labor Party, I offer our heartfelt condolences to Dallas Hayden's family and friends.'
The Hayden family echoed these sentiments, describing Dallas as someone who had 'a unique love and affinity with people'.
Her ability to foster relationships 'paved and opened doors to allow Dad to succeed in public life'.
They further added: 'Dad spoke often of his love for Dallas and the invaluable love and support she provided as an equal in their relationship, which allowed him to achieve and provide over 40 years of devoted public service.'

'For Mum, the loss of Dad was intolerable, and she was heartbroken and devastated at the loss of Dad in October last year.'

Dallas Hayden's contributions to the Australian community were recognised in 2020 when she was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia.
She worked tirelessly to support community groups and served as a patron for several charitable organisations.
Governor-General David Hurley praised her commitment to service, saying, 'Visitors to and staff at Government House recall her warmth and genuine interest in others, her passion and commitment to service.'
He added, 'Linda and I were grateful for the opportunity to spend time with her at her husband of more than 60 years' funeral. Theirs was a tremendous partnership, and Australia was richer for her service.'
They are survived by their children Georgina, Ingrid, and Kirk.
