Could this be the end of skyrocketing power bills? The government’s latest plan explained

Rising energy costs have left many households struggling to keep up, with families searching for long-term solutions to ease the financial burden.

A new initiative could offer a game-changing opportunity, promising significant relief for those looking to cut their power bills.

As plans unfold, questions arise about who will benefit, how it will work, and what this could mean for the future of household energy use.

The Australian government expanded its efforts to help households reduce energy costs by extending a $144 million electrification initiative.

Federal Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen directed the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to consider funding more community electrification demonstration projects.

This decision followed the success of ‘Electrify 2515’, a $12 million pilot program in the 2515 postcode near Wollongong.

The program provided subsidies for households to switch to energy-efficient electric appliances and move away from gas power.

ARENA had backed 49 projects over six years, and the agency was now exploring similar programs in the ACT, Western Australia, Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania.

Participating households received support to install solar panels, home batteries and energy-efficient appliances, along with access to shared community energy storage.

By transitioning to solar electricity, families could see a significant drop in energy bills, with experts citing it as a major cost-saving measure during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

‘In this cost-of-living crisis one of highest-impact, non-inflationary things governments can do is to help households electrify and deliver thousands in permanent power bill relief,’ Senator David Pocock said.

Low-income families often struggled with the upfront cost of replacing appliances, making it harder for them to access these savings, which the programs aimed to address.

‘On average, homes with rooftop solar save $1500 per year on energy bills and the Climate Council, along with other organisations, has long called for those savings to be more accessible to low-income households,’ Climate Council chief executive Amanda McKenzie said.

Beyond household savings, these projects contributed to Australia’s transition away from fossil fuels and helped reduce emissions.

Swinburne renewable energy expert Professor Mehdi Seyedmahmoudian highlighted the importance of the initiative, noting that it aligned with the suburban-wide microgrid concept.

‘These trials are designed to enable communities and individual households to participate in an open, distributed energy market where energy is produced, consumed, and managed locally,’ he said.

‘This approach not only offers technological benefits but also presents an appealing business model for private sector investment in developing community-level energy management and transaction technologies.’

‘By scaling these proven strategies to a suburban context, the suburban-wide microgrid can accelerate the energy transition, enhance resilience, and support a sustainable future for communities across Australia.’

Key Takeaways
  • The Australian government expanded a $144 million electrification initiative, directing ARENA to fund more community projects after the success of ‘Electrify 2515’, which helped households transition from gas to energy-efficient electric appliances.
  • Over six years, ARENA supported 49 projects, and similar programs were now being considered in the ACT, Western Australia, Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania, providing subsidies for solar panels, home batteries and shared community energy storage.
  • Experts highlighted the potential for significant savings, especially for low-income households, with rooftop solar alone reducing energy bills by an average of $1500 per year.
  • The initiative aligned with the suburban-wide microgrid concept, offering technological and economic benefits while helping Australia reduce emissions and transition away from fossil fuels.

Need a plan B, after a cyclone struck in Townsville, my sister's house was the only one in the street with gas, they were still able to cook for themselves and some neighbours as well. RENEWABLE POWER IS NOT RELIABLE and never will be.

It’s not the govt that sends the gas overseas, it’s the greedy owners who get a better price for sending off shore than selling it locally. What the govt should do is make a rule that they have to keep enough for local consumption so that they don’t have to buy it back at inflated prices. On top of that in my opinion gas is a dirty fuel as is coal and no good for the planet. All this privatisation in the past has had a detrimental effect on the fiscal problems this country now faces.
the Federal Government is the ones that privatized the gas in the first place now they are trying to tell the over sea's corporate how they can run there investment in Australian Gas ?? they got 2 hopes in hell they sell it over sea's then we buy our gas back YES we buy it back at a very inflated rate YES we have a export terminal plus a import terminal next to it and all of this at the federal Government approval SO WHO IS HELPING WHO to survive ?? they not helping us the grass roots Australians all they are doing is lining there pockets at our expense and a lot of people cannot see this we are getting ripped off for what Australia has in the ground and the Government agrees with it the lucky country not any more just greedy corporate and governments running things

This is unfair for apartment dwellers. They almost never have solar panels in the building therefore this is discriminatory as usual from this Government which comes up with these proposals approaching an election. However the most important point I want to make is that this is really coming out of the budget if legislated. Where does the money come from? I will answer that. THE TAXPAYERS. So not only do tax paying taxpayers not get any benefit they also have to pay for the subsidy to others. Bowen is the stupidest communistic fool any government has ever had. Albo is second. Time to shift them out.

i thought the fit was going to end in june and have to pay to put unused back in the grid i only get 5c fit now, they give it in one hand and take it back in the other
Better than the lousy 2 cents we get here in WA.
Luckily we have the cheapest power in the country. I used to live in SA, their power is the dearest in the country, NSW not far behind.

As usual a hell of a lot of BS there with Bowen and his cohorts let alone our weak each way ALBO
We were promised, tomes and times again that we were going to receive a price reduction of $275.00 per household. Did any of you get/got it.? Is any of that BS going to stop.?
All I know is that my power bill went from close to $1,000.00 dollars per quarter up to $3350..00 per quarter and increasing while Bowen is giving our money to some international and multinational non tax paying firms and companies WHILE DESTROYING OUR ENVIRONMENTS AND FARMS.'
Where are the tree hugging Greenies when all of this destruction of environment and protected species of animals is going on.?

OMG Do you light up the whole town?? I didn't get a price reduction, but I did get $700 power relief in 2024 and similar the previous year.

No. I will not spend more doing the job the govt is supposed to do i.e. building power stations to provide reliable electricity to everyone at a reasonable cost. Now they want us to "build the power stations" on our rooftops & pay a pittance for the electricity which we add to the grid.
With what I get back off my electricity a/c each month this will never pay for the panels on my roof so I am ut of pocket big time with them.
This is a big con by the govt to get the public to think they are saving by paying thousands of $$$s to pu panels on the roof but until you have recouped the cost of the panels & ongoing cost of battery (if you have one) you are virtually still paying for electricity.
Good post. But I like to put it to you e tall in a simple way. And that is that the records shows that Bowen has the worst records of any present and past Ministers for failing in everything he did in his entire life in Parliament. Not one of his past portfolio has even been successful, so, do you expect that this time he is going to do anything right.?

Lucky you. I got nothing, not one cent but constant increases even though due my wife's health I need to keep the electricity (The Air-conditioner going at a set temperature).
And IF and yes only IF, a reduction has been paid or given to my electricity supplier, (I am not aware of) it didn't make any difference to me because my power bill it never came down one cent but ONLY GOING UP. I know that our electricity rates are possibly the highest, if not for real the highest in the World. That is what Communism will do toy you and me.

The rebate you get for energy going back to the grid, I agree, is a pittance compared to what we pay..
But this rebate is not expected to pay for your system, that is a silly statement.

It is the amount you save on your energy bill that covers the cost of the system.

I recouped the cost of my system in about two and a half years and then had bills of $50 to $100 after that, a considerable savings.

You do know that you need to use most of your electricity during the sunshine hours, don't you?? My stepdaughter complained about her solar system, but was washing and ironing and running their pool in the evening.🤦
If you can't run your power when you want it and make use of the electricity if and when you need it, what is the use of it.
Are we going back to the stone age to suit the ideologies of a crazy PM and his crazy nut Bowen.?

I totally agree with you. To rely solely on renewable will be a disaster.
The sun doesn't always shine, the wind doesn't always blow. We had a power blackout 2 years ago that lasted 4 days
Luckily we had gas for cooking and solar hot water.
We need a mix of all.

I love solar but right now living in Townsville we have had more than a week of rain and more coming so if we were solar only, we would have no power right now.

The Australian government expanded its efforts to help households reduce energy costs by dangling another vote carrot byextending a $144 million electrification initiative because the next election is just around the corner, folks. Note how the RBA suddenly reduced the interest rates? The question is: How will your life look like with Albanese for a next term or Dutton? How will he perform? Scary, isn't it? Which devil will you choose? The one you know, or the one you know? Are you going to tap into your'barracking for 'your' team because your family has for generation? Or are you going to really going to do your research for a candidate that fits your line of thinking? Or are you going to be a donkey and foul your vote so that it will go to the party you didn't know out of spite? Or are you one of those who decided to be an exotic artist on the ballot paper? You can thank our compulsory voting for federal elections in Australia which was legalized in 1924 by the Bruce-Page government, a conservative coalition of the Nationalist and Country parties. The whole idea is that we democratically get to choose who we want to run this country in a way we shouldn't suffer, but to prosper. Conclusion? Screw the governments handouts and fix the problems so we can functions as a first world country and not have 200000 homeless peolple existing in squaller.

What state do you live in. The Commonwealth Govt gave an electricity rebate last year. I thought everybody got it. But I could be wrong.
Here in WA we received $300, plus $400
from the state govt
I do know that not all state govts paid one.
I must admit WA always seem to be much more generous than other states when it comes to rebates and concessions.

while we love the initiative sadly it has limitations. We purchased a house last year. It had minimal solar on the roof. We wanted to increase this and hoped it would fit the criteria for support but it doesn’t. Only one time per house regardless of how much you install

I do believe a large majority of people vote "how their family did" and don't give much note at all of how they vote.

It's a matter of the devil you know or the devil you don't know. Take your pick. They're as bad as each other.

I have already had solar panels installed which has cut my electricity bill by half. The only things we use gas for are the stove and hot water system and we have gas bottles. One household gas bottle lasts for around 7 months now there is only myself and my adult son living here. I'm not sure I'd like to use an electric stove because if the power goes out we won't be able to cook.

No doubt, it's a direct way for our tax dollars to support more and more troubling energy cost while taking load off conventional generational methods.

We are exactly the same. A good mix is what is required.

Very true my panels haven’t paid ,power companies are reaping the benefit , so what happens when the power stations close , we will be spending more time without power, and what will happen when hospitals etc are without power. Who will be responsible for the disasters from this?
