Computer Scam.

Hi fellow Members. Recently I had a problem that I didn’t need. I love photography and am usually looking at photo’s on Face Book. Recently whilst looking at a photograph on line with the comment "the photographer didn’t know what he was looking at until he checked the photo later", the photo looked like a whales tail sticking up out of the water with something on it, I clicked on the photo to enlarge it to see what was on the Whales tail, suddenly my Screen froze, went blue and a notification came up on my screen saying “Call Apple Assist immediately on this number”, number given, I phoned the number and a man answered saying “Apple Assist, how may I help”, I explained what had happened and the gentleman on the phone, after allowing him remote access to the computer said, ”I’m sorry but you have been on a Child Pornography site, that’s why you have been shutdown”, I told the man that I have never been on a Child Pornography site and told him how I feel about Child Pornography and the abusers, so he asked if I had been using a Pornography site”, the answer again was no. Ok said the man we’ll have a look at your computer and fix the problem. I watched as he went through my system, he showed me three addresses that had been illegally added to my computer which he deleted saying that all should be good now,” then added "I advise you to get our Apple Security added to your computer to stop this happening again”, the prices are”, 12 months US $175.00. 3 years US $350.00. US$ 550.00 or a lifetime cover of US $700.00. When I saw the prices on the screen the penny dropped!! I said that I would get a second opinion from a member of a Macintosh Apple Computer Club that I’m a member of, the Gentleman was not happy saying “You do what you like and hung up”, the Computer then went back to being frozen with the 'Call Apple Assist immediately' still on my screen. The end result was that my ‘friend' from the club 5 hours later, cleaned the computer for me finding MALWARE hiding within the computer and removed it and making the computer safe again, at the cost of $75.00. I notified my Bank, p&n Bank, who advised me to get a new Credit Card and froze my account until I sent them a detailed receipt from the person that cleaned my computer and p&n Bank Security were satisfied all was good. This Scam cost me $75.00, the inconvenience of changing my card details with the businesses that deduct monthly payments, waiting for the new card and having my bank account frozen for a while.
I have been pretty good at recognising a SCAM until this one. So beware on what you click on, on line, this was just a photo that I tried to enlarge.
Take care.

I too have had this happen to me, i couldn't use my laptop for several months, i didn't have enough dollars to get it fixed, and just recently i was on FB and a notice came up about seniors and pensions and because i had read that pensions were due for an increase i clicked on it, only to find that the site was click bait/ransomware. Thankfully i have an antivirus installed and didn't lose my laptop for an extended length of time. Like you i had thought i was relatively good at spotting scams

Something similar happened to me years ago.I was told they could fix it for a fee, can’t remember how much. They wanted my credit card details and l said l don’t have one, l did but didn’t want to tell them. I went to the supermarket and bought a card with a limited amount on it instead and used that. Since l am much more aware now of these scams now than l was 12 years ago l won’t fall for that again.

Regardless who it is I would never give people online access to my computer.

Very lucky your friend could come and clean it up and that you didn't lose and money.

Thank you for letting us know, scary thinking this happened by just clicking on a photo.
Hi Suzanne, you’re correct, but at the time and the Apple Assistance / Security logo suddenly appearing I actually thought that Apple had picked up on my having a problem. I belong to the Mac users group which has quite a few Computer experts as members, so I was fortunate in getting help. Apart from the inconvenience caused, it’s a shame that I have to be fully aware now of looking at other peoples photo’s and treating them with suspicion, if I want to examine someone's photo now I take a desk top photo of it and look at it that way. Take care, stay safe.

Scammer in action, That’s how easy it is to get caught by a scammer, A very wise decision to call Apple Assist the more wary everyone can become about these lowlifes the less the opportunities for them to scam people.
The bank in this case Apple Assist plus any others will advise you if you are unsure of any suspect emails or phone call simple hang up immediately and check.

I'm with the never ever group regarding giving someone access remotely. Never have & never will, but must admit to a couple of close shaves when finger was hovering.. reason thankfully prevailed.

Wow, that’s a scary experience! Thanks for sharing your story—it’s a great reminder to stay cautious online. These scammers are getting more convincing, and it’s alarming how quickly they can take control.
It’s good to hear you were able to sort it out with the help of your friend and bank. Freezing your account and getting a new card was definitely the right move. Hopefully, your post helps others avoid falling into the same trap. Stay safe online, and thanks again for the heads-up!

A couple of times I have clipped on something that looked 'cute' on Facebook only to see pulsating warning signs of my screen indicating a major problem with suggestions to click on things to fix it & no button to close the page. All ok after that. The only option was to manually shut down the computer & log back in. It makes you think twice about clicking on anything on Facebook. Now I look to see if there are any comments underneath before I click. Sometimes the comments indicate it's a site that just leads to boring ads & has nothing to do with the lure.

Any bait story published on Facebook which leads to another site to complete I immediately delete, If already hooked Ctrl-Alt-Del then close facebook fixes things.. mongrels all!
