Coles supermarket staff brawl with an alleged thief in wild carpark confrontation - Watch the video here

We've heard tales of people attempting to shoplift from supermarkets, whether it's putting something in their pocket or walking out with a full trolley-load of items without paying.

Sadly, in these tough economic times where many are struggling to make ends meet, this type of thing is happening more and more often.

But while some thieves do manage to get away with their ill-gotten gains, others are not so lucky – as one would-be crook found out the hard way when she was caught red-handed by some Coles employees.

Members of staff at Coles have been widely praised after they defended themselves against an alleged thief in a confrontation that was caught on camera.

In a widely shared video on social media, supermarket staff can be seen rushing to confront a woman who was allegedly trying to steal a trolley full of grocery items. The video, which had amassed over 2.4 million views, showed the workers tackling the woman and attempting to apprehend her.

'These thieves tried stealing a full shopping cart,' the footage’s caption read.

'Great job to these workers for getting it back.'

In the video, two female employees from Coles can be seen stopping the woman from escaping the parking lot with several grocery items she allegedly tried pilfering from the store.

The woman put up a fight as she struggled to push past the two employees, letting go of her jumper to free herself from getting held down by one staff member.

The woman continued to struggle with the Coles workers, determined to escape. One worker got a hold of the trolley that the items were placed on, but the alleged thief continued to wrestle with the second employee to grab the box of goods.

The alleged thief then managed to get a grip on a box, ripping it from the trolley in a desperate attempt to keep it.

While the footage has left viewers shocked given the violence, others expressed their support and admiration for the Coles workers.

One person wrote: 'Good on you ladies!'

'They need a pay rise now,' another said.

A third chimed in: 'Great job to these workers for getting it back.'

Some people were worried that the workers might have been hurt in the altercation.

'The workers should never put themselves in a position like this, so dangerous,' one person pointed out.

Another person added: 'It’s really not worth it, risking your safety for a billion-dollar company.'

Others remarked that it was distressing to watch such an 'uncomfortable' video given that many people are starving and struggling to make ends meet.

One comment read: 'This is so sad. Times are really tough. Don’t judge anyone.'

'Well they must be hungry ... and that’s sad,' another said.

A Coles representative confirmed that the company is currently investigating the issue, assuring that 'the safety and welfare of our team and customers are [their] highest priority'.

'We are reviewing what occurred and ensuring our team members always put safety first when working in our stores,' the spokesperson said.

It's a case of "You're damned if you do, damned if you don't". I have worked in a store where we employees were told not to try to apprehend thieves for safety reasons but it goes against the grain to see someone wheeling out expensive items in front of you. Once they realise you won't stop them, they become more arrogant.
At the end of the day, it's the store's responsibility to provide a safe workplace and that means they need to instal security staff, which, in turn, means increased prices.
Catch 22

I admire these ladies so much! If a small business owner tried this they would have to deal with further ramifications from the perpetrators though. Sadly, most of the time they aren’t allowed to because they will be punished by law as well. The same goes if someone breaks into your home, you can’t defend yourself because if the person gets hurt then the homeowner gets in trouble! It’s ridiculous. I think the innocent victims, retail owners/workers and homeowners etc, should be able to defend their goods and property!
The laws need to change to protect the victims. And crack down on smaller incidents where they are rapping people over the knuckles for incidents.
When I was younger, I was afraid to even think of doing something like this because the police actually had the authority to do something about it!

To those

It is often said that in these tough times people steal to feed their families. Not always the case. We had serial offenders who knew they could steal without confrontation because we were told not to stop them, for safety reasons. And their take was often sold on to others. So, I'm not sure why these team members did this. It is very frustrating to watch a trolley load of goods walk out the door but at the end of the day chasing these thieves will never stop them. They often go to another store with less resistance. In some people's minds stealing is a right.

Well done to the staff. But when you make self serve so readily available no wonder the thieves are on the rise. I use self serve but would prefer a check out except there’s only 1 or 2 with a queue. Certainly no longer a place for juniors to get casual jobs.
Oh Aldi still have checkouts but you need to reload the trolley faster than emptying it and you can’t do both at the same time

No excuse for stealing, putting staff in danger, then abusing the staff who are just doing their job.

If you are so desperate, approach charities or perhaps the stores themselves to see if there are any cheap or free items they can spare. Not sure the big stores would be very helpful though. Often the smaller stores will give away excess stock at the end of the day...occasionally.

Better still, get a job and/or training that will lead to a job. With unemployment so low, there are so many opportunities out there at present.

Just because economic times are tough should not be used as an excuse to allow people to steal from stores. She was in the wrong and committed a crime. People will say they should have called the police. By the time they arrived she would have been gone.
I agree.
There is no need to steal.
All charities have food vouchers available for people struggling to feed their families.
We’ll done to the staff.
She was probably a frequent offender and the staff were over it 😡

Strange, I have shopped at several Aldi stores, every one of them did not start scanning the goods until I had completely finished unloading my trolley.

Stealing is the bane of a shopkeepers life. We used to have a rogues gallery in the staffroom, security pictures of known and suspected shoplifting customers. If one was recognised a special code went out over the tannoy and everyone in the store had their eyes peeled and the person got followed throughout the store. It may have gone some way to minimise theft but was very time consuming and tied up staff for the length of time they were in store. :(

Very dangerous they should have just got her rego number and called police if she was injured or killed those involved would be in a lot of trouble. Not that I don't agree with them it's just so risky

I have had no problem at Aldi either in fact the checkout person is always willing to help an older lady like me if my helper is late getting to help me. The other end of the till is a bit different as they do work at speed.

If someone breaks into your Home, you ARE permitted, by Law, to protect yourself.

I had heard otherwise so many times @gordon1940 , thank you for clarifying. I have probably misunderstood what I’ve heard and read. But it’s certainly a relief knowing homeowners can protect themselves!
