Coles shoppers are outraged over this cheese’s 'insane' price hike

Whether it's melted on top of some delicious toasties, crumbed and fried as part of a savoury meal, or just eaten straight out of the packet as a tasty snack (pun intended), there's no denying that cheese makes almost everything better.

Aside from its well-known deliciousness, another thing we can all agree on is that cheese isn't as cheap as it used to be.

If you’ve noticed, the cost of dairy products has been rising steadily over the past few years – and it doesn't look like it's going to stop any time soon.

So you can imagine how surprised and outraged Coles shoppers were when they recently spotted an extraordinary price increase on a popular brand of cheese.

One shopper recently took to Facebook when they noticed that CHEER Tasty 36-Slice 750g packs were now being sold at Coles for a whopping $17.55!

In comparison, they were sold for only $10.00 in 2021. That means there was a 75.5 per cent increase from the same product's price — almost double. Yikes!

Many people reacted to the post, and they expressed their dismay at the huge leap in the price of the cheese.

‘Between the cost of petrol and interest rates, I can barely afford home-brand cheese!’ one person’s relatable remark read.

‘CHEER is the new Brie or Camembert (cheese). Save it for those special occasions.’

‘I reckon the price of cheese has gone up the most, it’s crazy.’ another pointed out.

Another shared: ‘I understand dairy items have increased, but this is so wrong.’

Others also revealed that the same kind of CHEER Tasty Cheese is also found at Woolies for $3 less, but as one person put it: ‘That’s just as bad.’

CHEER Tasty Cheese has yet to issue a response.

Coles though has taken note of the customers’ dismay and pointed at their other cheese options shoppers may opt to choose from.

A spokesperson said: ‘We are always looking to offer the best value possible to customers where we can.’

‘We have many cheese options at great value prices including Coles Cheese Block 1kg at $9 and Tasty Shredded Cheese Bags 700g at $7.50, both of which are LOCKED until January 2023.’

Bega Slices 250g have a special of $1 discount for Flybuys members until the end of November – with this week having an in-store special of $5 with the incremental dollar discount for Flybuys members added on top,’ they added.

‘We also have a great value Coles Brand Cheese Slice 500g option at $8.60.’

Food prices have gone up 7.3 per cent over the last year — the highest in three decades — and dairy products are among the worst-hit food groups.

Reports say milk is more expensive by 12c per litre at $1.81 today compared to $1.69 in 2021.

Key Takeaways

  • Coles shoppers have aired their disappointment at CHEER Cheese over an apparent price hike on one of the company's most popular products.
  • CHEER Tasty 36-Slice 750g packs are now priced at $17.55, up from $10 in 2021.
  • The price hike has prompted an angry reaction from many Facebook users, who are disappointed at CHEER's decision to raise its price so steeply.
  • A Coles spokesperson said there are plenty of other affordable cheese options for shoppers in store and online.
According to industry analysts, poor grazing conditions caused by either too-dry or too wet weather have had the downstream effects of less milk production.

Now, since it would make sense for you to milk your cheese purchases for every cent they’re worth, we thought you’d appreciate some ideas on what to do with leftover cheese here and how to eat cheese ‘the right way’ here.

So, have you noticed price increases in your favourite cheese brand as well? How big of a part does cheese have in your diet?

There are much nicer cheese slices from Aldi, Hillview cheese from woolies so why pay the ridiculous price for an Americsn cheese companies ripoff. Get with it Australia and stop supporting this outrageous pricing.

Outrageously overpriced.
Probably due to the low profits where Australians have stopped buying their Cheer Cheese after grovelling down to change the name.
Plenty other brands for us to buy.

Coles, and Woolies too I suspect, not that long ago price hiked a heap of items, substantially, and then had a big ad splurge on tv and online, that they were discounting a large range of products, so that we would save heaps on our shopping.
Thing was, the discounted prices were still higher than the original price just a short time prior.
I just bought cheese a couple of days ago it was the same price as I always pay in fact My grocery bill doesn't seem to have gone up that much maybe in Tasmania were a bit behind

Please bring back that tasty cheese made by the Coon family. It was far more affordable !!
I also wonder if the cows feel exploited as no one had the decency to consult them about the name change.
