As the Easter season approaches, Coles has found a way to add a little spice to everyone's celebrations... We’re all accustomed to eating hot buns that are either chocolatey or fruity, but have you ever thought about the iconic easter treat being… spicy?
Coles has consistently been killing it in their hot cross bun extravaganza. Since their first launch of the product for the year back in December, they have successfully sold more than 25 million buns!
Recently, the Australian supermarket chain introduced a limited edition, jalapeno-flavoured hot cross buns which are somewhat inspired by the Bakery Stone Baked – Laurent Mini Pane Di Casa range, whose jalapeno loaves were deemed sensational by Coles customers.

Coles Manager of Bakery, Deli, and Seafood, Andy Mossop, stated that “Coles is always looking for ways to excite their customers with great quality, innovative products. This helps make Coles the destination for Easter.”
“We know how much Australians love their hot cross buns - they're a quick and easy meal fix and are perfectly sized for snacking and school lunchboxes” Mossop continued.
The limited edition buns went through a rigorous and lengthy process of fine-tuning and taste-testing to guarantee a perfect mix of sweet and savoury. In the end, they came up with a delicious flavour profile where the bun is peppered with diced jalapeno, parmesan and cheddar cheese, and finally topped with another extra layer of cheese.
Mossop shared that Coles likes experimenting with a variety of flavour combinations to provide their shoppers with special, and unique goods from the supermarket.
“Coles took a risk with our first-ever savoury vegemite hot cross bun edition and customers absolutely loved them, so we knew we had to spice things up with our latest range. We're confident our customers will love it just as much as they loved the previous new flavours like vegemite, lamington, and sticky date pudding hot cross buns.” he said.
However, they aren’t the only store switching things up for the Aussies this Easter season. Woolworths also recently revealed their most indulgent hot cross bun flavour yet and if you’re a Cadbury fan, you’ll definitely want to get your hands on this!
Cadbury collaborated with Woolworths to bring a distinct flavour combination of dark chocolate and Australian grown raisins soaked in rum. We delightfully present to you... drum roll please! – the latest Old Gold ‘Rum & Raisin’ hot cross buns.
“Customers who are looking to treat themselves with bolder flavours are going to enjoy this new hot cross bun.” Woolworths director Jason McQuaid said.
The buns are only available until stocks run out. They come in a pack of four, costing $4.50 each.
Well, that surely made our stomachs grumble! Would you rather buy Coles extraordinary jalapeno-flavoured hot cross buns or Woolworths decadent Rum & Raisin ones? Let us know in the comments!
