Coles merges two iconic Aussie flavours in new hot cross buns

It seems like Coles is bringing Easter to Aussies a few months early as they unveil new flavours for their famous hot cross buns, with one controversial flavour being the talk of the town!

Coles’ new Vegemite and cheese-flavoured hot cross buns were created in partnership with Bega Cheese and will be available for a limited time only. They can be purchased for $3.50 for a pack of four.

The Easter treat boasts its buns infused with Vegemite and parmesan cheese filling, finished with indulgent cheese on top that would surely make for a mouth-watering afternoon snack.

Coles also recommends having the hot cross bun slathered liberally with butter and toasted to perfection for the best experience.

Other bun flavours include sticky date and butterscotch, salted caramel, apple and cinnamon, traditional fruit, chocolate and fruit-free varieties. For those looking out for their health, gluten-free chocolate and traditional options are also available.

The supermarket giant also implied that they would introduce more flavours as the Easter season draws near.

According to Andy Mossop, Coles’ general manager of bakery, deli and seafood, the store’s bakery team spent a lot of time and work perfecting the Vegemite and cheese hot cross bun recipe.

“We know how much our customers love hot cross buns at Easter, and we know how much they love Vegemite, so we decided to merge these two icons to create a delicious, savoury spin on our hot cross buns,” he said.

“It’s important to us at Coles to have some fun with flavours, and we always want to give customers something they’ve never had before, but ultimately it has to taste great.”

However, their bold move had Coles fans divided on social media. Some expressed their support for the rather unusual flavour combination, while others did not.

“This is good, actually!” one supportive Coles shopper wrote, while another added: “We want the hot cross buns. I especially want these particular hot cross buns because Vegemite is possibly the greatest spread known to man.”

One customer even argued, saying: “Ok, this might sound crazy, but if you don’t like them being sold at this time of year… Don’t buy them.”

“Let the rest of us enjoy them,” he added.

While some Coles fans were enthusiastic about the new flavour, those in the Anti-Vegemite camp aired out their frustrations as well.

“What the hell? Savoury vegemite/cheese hot cross buns? No, dammit. Sweet with fruit and/or chocolate ONLY,” said one shopper.

Another added: “This has gone too far. I will die on this hill. Hot cross buns are not to be crossed with Vegemite and cheese.”

One Twitter user even added humour to the situation, saying: “Even with the pandemic, the changing climate, the social disconnection and political corruption, I could hold some hope for the future.”

“But cheese and Vegemite Easter buns? Nope. Doomed. The lot of us. Mark my words; there will be smiting.”

Not sure vegemite is in the spirit of hot cross buns. Call them something else and you could have them on the menu at any time of the year and thoroughly enjoy them. Hot Cross buns are a sweet toasted deliciousness only for the Easter period.

It seems to me that traditional fruit and spice Hot Cross buns should be reserved for just the short time over Easter like eggnog is at Christmas. But certainly have any number of flavours all through the year jyst leave off the crosses.

The Apple & Cinnamon buns are lovely, and the apple males it rather refreshing.
Wish they'd sell Apple & Cinnamon buns all year - just leave the 'cross' off!
Coffee flavoured would be lovely but NOT with chovoka tt e in ut.
Just make Coffee flavoured HCbuns, please.
Who misses those wonderful Coffee Scrolls we used to buy every week?
They were brilliant "go to's" for taking to share at meetings, with tea/coffee when friends dropped in, the kids fought over who got how much icing on their piece ....

Bring back Coffee Scrolls, Coles & Woolies!
