Coles is giving away free ice cream! Here’s how to get yours

Scoring a little something extra while doing the weekly shop is always a welcome surprise, especially when it’s a treat everyone loves.

A new promotion has popped up, offering shoppers the chance to walk away with a sweet reward—but only for a limited time.

Here’s what you need to know about the giveaway that’s making waves at the checkout.

Coles introduced its first-ever Summer Treats Buy-Scan-Win promotion, giving Flybuys members the chance to score free ice cream or ice blocks.

Between 5 February and 4 March, customers who spent $10 or more in-store on ice cream or ice blocks and scanned their registered Flybuys had the chance to win a free summer treat.

Winners will be notified instantly at the checkout.

Winners could collect their freebies from the freezer aisle during their next shop.

Alternatively, they could save it for a later date, with redemption available until 4 April.

The promotion was backed by 10 suppliers, including Bulla, Mars, Unilever, Peters, and Cape Byron.

Coles’ Own Brand was also part of the lineup, featuring some of Australia’s most-loved frozen treats.

Coles General Manager Customer Engagement and Loyalty Alice Moncrieff said the campaign was designed to ‘surprise and delight’ shoppers while adding a little fun to their grocery run.

‘Summer may be winding down, but at Coles, we believe the season of treating yourself should last a little longer, which is why we’re giving registered Flybuys members an opportunity to scoop up some of their favourite ice cream and ice block brands, for free – as a thank you for shopping in store at Coles,’ she said.

‘We know our customers love ice cream as an occasional treat and what better way to cool off in the warmer months than with free ice cream—with prizes including classic Magnum, Connoisseur varieties, and decadent Häagen-Dazs tubs, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.’

Carrageenan is contained in many food and non food products. It’s used for thickening, and a stabiliser. It’s use is still legal in Australia because of the controversy of its risks.

Here is a list of the major uses of carrageenan, a naturally occurring polysaccharide.

Desserts, ice cream, cream, milkshakes, yogurts, salad dressings, sweetened condensed milks, sauces, beer, pâtés and processed meats (e.g., ham), soy milk and other plant milks, diet drinks, pet food, toothpaste, vegetarian hot dogs, shampoo and cosmetic creams, personal lubricants, air freshener gels, fire fighting foam, marbling (art), shoe polish, biotechnology and
pharmaceuticals.

While more research needs to be undertaken on the effects of carrageenan on the human body, here are the major ailments attributed to it.

Ulcerative colitis, inflammatory bowel disease and Crohn's disease. Nothing about cancer, asthma or rashes.

A November 2024 study suggests that carrageenan can disrupt intestinal barrier function of insulin in Type II diabetes patients.
