Coles Cafeterias

A huge treat for me when younger was the lunch at Coles with Mum & sometimes joined by Dad. My 'must have' was their chips & gravy followed by the delicious Apple Pie with (REAL) cream!! Never yet had as good an Apple Pie with (REAL) cream. As I got older my friends & I would gather at the Coles Cafeteria in Fremantle (Western Australia) each day after school. By then it was chips in a bucket, still yummy! And if had the money a delicious (no gristle!!) meat pie. Again when I got older & was a Mum myself (in my very early 30's) I would go to Perth City Coles Cafeteria with my Mum & Dad on our trips up to Perth from Busselton (South of State). Enjoying a nice meal & STILL my delicious Apple Pie with (REAL) cream. Full circle haha. Loved the place & the food!

Wow! this brings back fond memories. No trip "rare" to "town" ie Melbourne was complete without lunch at Coles Cafeteria I can still hear the clatter and buzz of conversation. The food never disappointed this young lad! Ahhh memories a sad day when they closed down... sigh omg was it back in the 60's ???

It was early 60's in Victoria when they closed. I worked in the Buying office of G. J. Coles and very occasionally could afford lunch in the cafeteria. Used to love their trifle and real cream.

@Chris I used to LOVE Apple Pie with REAL cream. My grandma used to make it for us all the time, now you've made me crave it! I'll have to dig up her recipe and try and cook it this week. There was nothing better than when the pie was nice and hot and the cream was freshly whipped...

I can remember pushing a tray along the rails towards the cashier at Coles in the city

As a kid it was a rare treat to get to Coles which was about an hour's drive from the small country town that l grew up in. I don't remember what we ate so much, but l loved looking at everything in each department.. especially the lollies and hot nuts, the cosmetics that all seemed so glam to a little girl. l would paw every little trinket l saw and loved it.

I remember visiting my Mum in Katoomba in the late 70's and early 80's. The Kmart and Coles was one big store and you could go from getting stuff in Kmart to getting your groceries in Coles and pay for the lot at one checkout. We'd go and get stuff in Kmart, then have lunch in their cafeteria and then do our grocery shopping and then go home. Being a tourist town, they also catered for international customers so their deli was amazing. It was a sad day when they finally decided to put a wall up between Kmart and Coles, did away with the cafeteria and stopped stocking a lot of the lovely goods in their deli.

There was a similar store at Sunnybank Hills in Brisbane but I don’t remember there being a cafeteria in that one.

The backyard Dunny !
We had friends who lived just outside of town, we’d visit with all the kids, play cards have a few drinks and always be asked to stay overnight. But that old stinking dunny was enough to say no thanks maybe next time 🤣🤣🤣
