Coast Guard recovers bodies from superyacht wreckage, including tech CEO

Holidays on yachts are once-in-a-lifetime experiences one should enjoy.

Yet, Sicily's serene waters turned into a scene of devastation and loss as a superyacht and its passengers met their demise.

The tragedy sent ripples worldwide and highlighted the unpredictable nature of the sea.

The Italian Coast Guard recently recovered five bodies from the wreckage of the British-flagged superyacht Bayesian.

Among the recovered bodies was British tech magnate Mike Lynch.

The Coast Guard continues to recover all missing bodies, including Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, who remains unaccounted for.

According to Bayesian's manufacturer, The Italian Sea Group, the yacht was 'designed to be unsinkable'.

However, the yacht met its fate early on Monday after getting struck by a waterspout—a tornado over water—and sank rapidly while offshore.

Italian Sea Group Chief Executive Giovanni Costantino expressed his disbelief in an interview.

'It is unsinkable not only because it is designed that way, but also because it is a sailing ship, and sailing ships are the safest ever,' Constantino shared.

Yet, Constantino also added that the yacht should not 'hit the rocks violently, discarding the hull, and they must not take in water,' which could have contributed to its sinking.

Mike Lynch and his family were celebrating his recent acquittal in the United States Court.

The celebration turned into a nightmare when the yacht succumbed to a storm.

Other missing bodies included one of Lynch's US lawyers, Christopher Morvillo, and his wife, Neda; Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of Morgan Stanley's London-based investment banking subsidiary; and his wife, Judy.

About 15 passengers of the Bayesian managed to escape in a lifeboat—which included a mother who desperately held her 1-year-old baby above the waves.

The escapees were rescued and brought to safety by the sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell.

The tragedy prompted the Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor's Office to conduct an investigation.

Speculations also lingered as to why the Bayesian sank while a nearby sailboat during the incident remained unscathed.

The Bayesian's story is a stark reminder of the force of nature and the importance of safety while at sea.

It also underscored the unpredictable risks associated with sailing, regardless of the size or reputation of the vessel.

Reeks of the Titan submersible farce from last year. When that got crushed like a Coke can, the actor John Cusack commented that hundreds of refugees drowned off the coast of Greece about the same time but was lucky to garner a whimper in the media. Switch over to the Titan incident and it was wall to wall coverage, even stating the hours and minutes of oxygen left for these fools. An exercise in the macabre.

The Titan and the Bayesian victims do not get one microgram of sympathy from me.

I agree the media coverage is a little disproportionate to say the least.

Yachting, although it seems idyllic, is a tough and sometimes dangerous pursuit. We were involved in a Yachting disaster during March of this year. Although we lost absolutely everything, we escaped with our lives, and are able to start again. My sincere sympathies to all, and their families.
