Cleanup nightmare: Family criticised for leaving a messy spot at a pub

When kids are allowed to be kids, it can look like a war zone to an outsider.

That's exactly what many people felt when they saw one family dining in a pub recently after a fellow diner posted a picture of the mess the group's children had made.

Now, members, this is one of those cases where the story has two sides—both requiring consideration.

The pubgoer who posted the photo to an online forum wrote, 'Is this okay now? Family at local pub let their kid fling food all over the place and made zero attempts to stop them, then left it for staff to clean up.'

The image showed food all over the floor and not a single chair pushed in at the table. Understandably, many commenters were shocked and appalled by the sight and thought the behaviour was 'unacceptable' and 'disrespectful'.

The conversation split clearly, with many on one side claiming that it was never acceptable to let your kids run rampant in a restaurant and others calling for leniency on the family's actions, saying that at the end of the day, it is a service staff's 'job' to clean up after customers.

'Makes me wonder what their homes are like. Do they let their kids do this at home?' one commenter asked.

'My kids, my problem. Staff aren't paid enough to have to deal with that as well,' added a mum.

But not everyone was convinced of any wrongdoing, with some pointing out that it's par for the course in the service industry.

'It is okay. Takes one minute to sweep up. Stop being a sook,' said one user, with another agreeing and adding: 'They get paid to clean it, so let them do their job. Stop being sensitive.'

Among the latter, some said that while they understood the anger, parents also had to remember that they chose to take their children to an establishment (sometimes) dining, so they needed to accept the consequences.

Elsewhere, commenters said that just because someone takes their children to a restaurant doesn't mean they should be entitled to misbehave.

With that in mind, some people said the expectations are for parents to do their part by keeping their kids under control and not to create headlines like this.

Key Takeaways

  • A family has been criticised for allowing their child to throw food around at a pub restaurant, leaving a messy aftermath for staff.
  • The incident sparked debate online, with many people condemning the parents' lack of action, whilst some defended them, claiming it's the staff's job to clean.
  • Many commenters rebuked the behaviour, stating that it is 'unacceptable' and 'disrespectful', and some parents shared their experiences of personally cleaning up after their children in public places.
  • Others, however, argued that as paying customers, the cleaning up was not their responsibility—a perspective that several individuals strongly disagreed with.

Members, what do you think: are these parents out of line, or do the people criticising them just have high expectations of what a family spending time at a pub should look like?

If you take children to a restaurant or pub bistro you are sharing said place with others who do not appreciate being assaulted by noise and flicking food. Respect please.

It's called having manners and having respect for other people wheather they are service people or other customers.
You and your children should show respect.

Sadly,We live in an Era where People are Self- centred , entitled uncivilized, they have no Etiquette, nor Respect for Others, the Hospitality Industry is doing it tough this is unacceptable, Children learn by example ,the Parents should be teaching their Children Good Manners and Respect

Parents need set example.
Just a side issue.
I have been on cruise ships and you would be horrified how some leave the buffet room.

Take too much food, leave some on the floor, or all over table.
Don't get me started on kids on cruises! We did a P&O cruise some years ago. At the time, I was working for a boss who took holidays every school holidays and it was a condition of employment that staff only took holidays then as well. The kids hogged the lifts, treated the dining room as a playground and saved front row seats for their parents at the evening entertainment, despite its being against the rules.

We haven't been on a cruise since. I still remember that cruise as being an expensive holiday that was spoilt by other people's kids.

Same thing happened at our local Chinese restaurant. The floor was like a tip, tablecloths strewn around the bare tables. The noise was unbearable, and they ruined lots of people’s enjoyment. Even the owner was disturbed by that bunch of bogans. Trouble is I’m frightened to go again in case same happens.

those that say kids will be kids. time for you to grow up. these are not kids they are horror kids with horror parents. This is why we no longer go to pubs or clubs for meals. a decent restaurant where there are hopefully NO kids.

don't expect these parents to teach their kids respect, as they don't demonstrate to start with as if they did there would be next to nothing on the floor. The waiting staff are not cleaners and should not be expected to do this- vacuums etc whilst others are dining?

These children lack discipline and are not learning social norms.

They will grow into entitled pains in the bum.

The parents are a disgrace.

The people saying this is acceptable are the same sort of bogans as these parents, obviously, otherwise they wouldn't be making such ridiculous comments.
I was recently on a train where a well dressed young couple let their brats run up and down the seats, swinging off the straps and generally making a damn nuisance of themselves. The only comment they made was to tell them not to hurt themselves, and then went back to looking at their phones. Not much hope for those kids.

Amazing that some drop kicks are saying that it is acceptable for a family to leave their dining table and flooring in such a mess, probably could be because their own homes are similar pig sties. NO restaurant staff are paid enough to clear up this type of filth, would bet that the family responsible probably failed to leave a stipend to the staff responsible for serving glutens like this.

That is definitely NOT OK to leave an area wherever it is you have been dining in a disgraceful state, I don’t care if staff are paid to clean up. Staff are working in hospitality not the local Piggery 🤬🤬🤬
This is nothing, really. Ever sat in a maccas carpark at night and watched teens and small kids just sweep every container and left overs onto the car park floor?

no respect, entitled and it all starts with the parents doesn't it. as a child eating out was a treat once a year for me and it was always a pie and chips as there were no maccas etc in the 60's anything not eaten was binned and the area was left clean, I still take my empty cup and saucer and plate back to a counter when I have a coffee and sandwich at a café its ingrained in me and helps wait staff out.

Back in my day (I'm only 62) to go out for a meal was a big thing, we were expected to be on best behaviour & would never dream of making a mess like that. These days nobody pushes their chair in, children don't even sit at the table to eat they run back & forth to have a bite, then run off to play.

Absolutely out of line disgusting in fact. It’s the same as kids misbehaving in a supermarket going nuts and pulling stuff off the shelves. It’s your responsibility as a parent to control your kids this reflects poorly on the parents lack of discipline no boundaries. Taking kids to a restaurant is not a license for them to misbehave and throw food all over the floor. If that was me and my siblings when we were young we would have been made to clean it up!

Members, what do you think: are these parents out of line, or do the people criticising them just have high expectations of what a family spending time at a pub should look like?

was always told it is the cleaners job to clean. not clean up after you, so I was always mindful that my children did not leave a mess. I do see it more and more and parents have the belief that people are paid to clean up after them - one wonders who cleans up after them at home!!!

Unfortunately this is typical of parents today. No wonder children are irresponsible. I like the idea of banning children from eating establishments.
Don’t be so ridiculous, it’s not the childrens fault. You would probably ban them from being born next.
