Cleaning hack for kitchen extractor fan filters

A few days ago there was a cleaning hack posted for cleaning kitchen extractor fan filters. The hack advised the use of dishwashing tablets dissolved in a sink of water to soak the filters. Whilst this hack may work like magic for some filters, such as stainless steel, it is not advisable for all.
If you have aluminium filters DO NOT use dishwashing tablets/powder to clean them, the aluminium reacts with the dishwashing tablets/powder and turns a patchy dark grey colour that unfortunately cannot be reversed. If you are unsure what your filters are made of, your best bet is to purchase tricleanium from Bunnings, it works a treat and won’t damage aluminium.
