Cleaning expert reveals the ULTIMATE SECRET to eliminate mould from water bottles
We all own an awkwardly designed stainless steel water bottle that’s daunting to clean. We’re talking about the tall, petite ones that make it nearly impossible for your hand to fit in, in an attempt to clean the very bottom. It’s easy to overlook how dirty the insides of these bottles are! If you often drink from them too, you just might possibly be drinking out of a contaminated and mouldy bottle. Big yikes!
Sydney based decluttering expert, Anita Birges, shares the secret to removing mould usually hidden at the bottom of water bottles.

In a recently posted TikTok video, Anita can be spotted using grains of rice, dishwashing soap, and water to effectively get rid of the black mould that was growing inside her bottles.
She started by pouring half a cup of uncooked rice grains into the bottle and a dash of dishwashing liquid. The professional organiser then follows this by adding half a cup of water into the bottle.
“Put the lid on and shake, shake, shake... It’s that simple and easy,” she said.
She poured out the contents into a sieve to catch the rice and voila!
“Rinse thoroughly. Spotless clean water bottle. No mould,” Anita added as she proudly showed the clean bottle.
Her video has been viewed more than 85,000 times on TikTok and Instagram. Despite the clip’s popularity, hundreds of users had mixed reviews on the hack.
It was well-received by a couple…
“Genius. Shared with my 24-year-old daughter who never cleans her water bottle.” one person commented.
“Mine was so gross and I was about to throw it out. Now thanks to you - it’s clean.” another said
But several users thought it was a waste of perfectly good rice and offered alternative suggestions.
“What a waste of rice. Elbow grease, washing and drying them thoroughly every time you use them and hey presto, no mould build-up.” a displeased user wrote.
“I use a washing cloth and use a knife or fork to squish the cloth into the corners, then rinse thoroughly. Your way looks good too, but then I’d have to chuck out the rice.” another suggested.
