Christmas in August?! Supermarket shoppers are deciding whether to plan early or laugh it off

Aussies are doing a double take at stores across the country as Christmas decorations appear on shelves months earlier than expected.

Some shoppers are thrilled, others are wondering if it’s too soon.

Either way, the festive season is creeping up fast—and it’s only August.

Christmas stock has started to appear in Spotlight and Choice stores across Australia, catching shoppers by surprise. An Aussie shared in the Aussie Christmas Displays social media group that they had spotted festive items at Spotlight in Penrith.

‘Get ready! [This is at] Spotlight, looks like things are coming soon,’ they wrote, alongside a photo showing shelves stacked with baubles, gifts and candy canes under the slogan ‘Make it, gift it, be merry’.

Commenters were thrilled to see Christmas stock arriving so early, despite the holiday still being four months away.

‘I [saw that] the other day, I was like ‘Ohhhhh I can’t wait’,’ one person said.

‘My local had them fully stocked yesterday,’ another added.

‘Bring on Christmas,’ a third agreed, while another wrote, ‘Can't wait’.

Spotlight is not the only store preparing for the festive season. Shoppers reported seeing Christmas trees arriving at BIG W and a wide range of items already on shelves at Costco.

A BIG W spokesperson confirmed the early rollout, saying, ‘BIG W is rolling out a range of festive decorations in stores and online from early September.’

They added, ‘Savvy shoppers can also expect low prices locked in for a range of toys at the top of kids’ wish lists from October right up until Christmas time, with a wider range of great value gifts also available for the whole family.’

Woolworths has also joined the early Christmas push, with fruit mince pies, puddings and tarts available from 27 August. A spokesperson said, ‘We know some of our customers are already counting down to the festive season, and with the cost of living pressures we’re all experiencing some people may begin planning their Christmas budgets a bit earlier this year.’

‘This week we will start introducing some of our Christmas range to help our eager customers start getting ahead of the festive season, however, the full Christmas range won’t appear until towards the end of the year,’ the spokesperson added.

ALDI is taking a slightly later approach, with festive treats expected closer to the season. A spokesperson said, ‘We know Christmas is an exciting time, and plenty of people are already looking forward to planning the festive season! We're excited for customers to jump straight into the festivities when ALDI Christmas treats like our Kringle & Co Fruit Mince Pies and our Kringle & Co Plum Puddings land in stores closer to the festive period.’

‘Keep an eye out as we head into the season as there will be plenty of returning favourites as well as some exciting new additions to our festive range this year.’

The festive season seems to be arriving earlier every year, with stores rolling out Christmas stock months in advance.

If you’re curious how other supermarkets are handling the early rush, there’s a notable example that shows just how quickly holiday items can appear on shelves.

It’s a useful look at what shoppers might expect in the coming months and how stores are responding to demand.
