CHOICE’s choices: Save time and money with these powerful stain removers!

When it comes to cleaning products, many may assume that a higher price tag guarantees better quality and faster results.

This common misconception has been debunked by a consumer watchdog that reviewed over 20 different stain removal sprays to determine the most effective product.

CHOICE, an Australian not-for-profit consumer advocacy organisation, conducted the tests.

The products were tested against ten of the most common and stubborn stains, including sweat, makeup, oil, and blood.

Each stain was sprayed and left to sit for five minutes before being washed with the same detergent.

Sard Super Power stain remover spray achieved the highest score in the review with a CHOICE expert rating of 76 per cent.

Coming in second was ALDI’s $2.15 Di-San Pro Ultra Degreaser with Enzymes stain remover, scoring a very close 75 per cent.

'Price doesn’t always equal performance,' CHOICE Editorial Director Mark Serrels said, referring to ALDI’s $2.15 solution.

'Plus, it only costs 29 cents per 100ml, making it more than six times cheaper than its competitor.'

The Sard stain remover spray is priced at $1.90 per 100ml.

Interestingly, the budget ALDI spray outperformed the Sard product in several specific stain tests.

'The ALDI spray also outperformed Sard in some tests on stains such as tomato, collar grime and baby food,' Serrels shared.

'If you’re looking for a stain remover that is gentle on your wallet but effective on your stains, we highly recommend giving ALDI’s stain remover a go.'

In third place was another Sard product—the Oils and Grime stain remover spray—which scored 71 per cent and is priced at $1.90 per 100ml. This product was deemed the most effective in eliminating sweat stains.

The most expensive spray in the test—Stain Go Stain Remover Spot and Prewash—only scored 64 per cent overall despite costing a steep $4.50 per 100ml. This makes it 15 times more expensive than the ALDI product.

Three products performed worse.

The test scored Sard Wonder Power Fizz Stain Remover, Planet Ark Orange Power Pre-Wash Stain Remover, and Earth Choice Ultra Power Stain Remover a low 59 per cent, stating that the results are practically the same as not using a stain remover.

'These stain removers did not perform any better than plain laundry detergent in our testing,' Serrels noted.

'The most expensive of the three, Sard Wonder Power Fizz spray, was less effective than detergent when it came to removing just about every stain.'

If you’re not an ALDI shopper, don’t worry. The test also ranked two other supermarket homebrand budget sprays within the top 10 performers.

The Coles Ultra Pre-wash Stain Remover and Woolworths Clean Ultimate Oil & Grime Pre-Wash Stain Remover, both priced at $2.15, scored a 68 per cent performance rating.

However, ALDI’s Di-San Pro Ultra Degreaser with Enzymes might still be worth the trip because, according to shoppers, the $2.15 solution doesn’t just work on stains—it also doubles as a grout cleaner!
Key Takeaways

  • A consumer advocacy group, CHOICE, tested stain removal sprays and found the ALDI Di-San Pro Ultra Degreaser with Enzymes to be nearly as effective as the top-rated product, Sard Super Power stain remover, but significantly cheaper.
  • The ALDI stain remover outperformed more expensive brands in specific stain tests, offering great value for money.
  • The most expensive stain remover in the test, StainGo, scored lower than several cheaper options, proving that price does not guarantee performance.
  • Besides ALDI's product, two other budget-friendly stain removers from Coles and Woolworths also ranked in the top 10, proving effective and affordable.
