Child playing with medals of returned soldier

How beautiful is this photo of a child playing with a returned soldier’s medals at the ANZAC Day service in Petersham, Sydney, in 1933? What a gorgeous smile this soldier had! I also love the outfits worn in this photograph, especially the hat worn by the young child. To think of the stories these two could tell, it makes me feel quite emotional at the thought.

Usually I was going to work after the breakfast so never had the brandy. Now I watch bits and pieces on TV. I had two great uncles killed in action in the First World War and my grandfather lost an eye while serving in Australia during the First World War. I have had several other friends and relatives who have served overseas in different wars since then but fortunately they have all returned home safely.

From 12 to 15 years of age I was in the sea cadets and ANZAC day was our biggest parade in Wollongong that was 1968 to 1971 and later on in life my wife and I had our first son and he was born on ANZAC day he was due on the 29th but I told my wife no he be a little digger and come early on ANZAC day and he did
